Question "Easy" James Taylor songs to play?

I love his music. I'd like to learn how to play and sing some of his tunes, but I don't know which ones would be easier to start with. His fingerpicking is definitely not of the easier sort.. Any tips?

    Easy JT songs?

You're playing with fire (and rain). You have to be pretty handy (man) to play his tunes, and you'd have to practice everyday. You could just be chasing a copperline down a country road.

Then you could come back with your smiling face and tell us how sweet it is to shower the people with your guitar prowess.

(after typing that I'll probably have to go home by another way to my sweet potato pie)

Something in the way she moves isn't too hard.

Cheers, I will look into that one. It's one of my favorites of his too.

Slightly off topic, when JT was here a few months ago getting a D-TAR pickup in his Olson acoustic, I noticed that when he plays a first-position open D chord, he reverses the first and second finger compared to just about every other guitarist I've ever seen. The reason I mention that is because when you adopt that fingering, it's easier to do a JT-approved pull-off of the F# on the highest-string, second fret with your index finger.

Try it. You'll see what I'm talking about.

I just tried it. Don't think it makes a bit of difference. But he's JT and he do it any way he wants. Clearly it's been working for him. My personal style of playing is as of yet un-noteworthy.

Yeah, I've seen that before. I haven't quite found it benefiting me all that much, but I'll have to noodle a bit more with it.

    Answer: Country Road . . .

I love James Taylor, and I struggled with the same issue years ago on my continuing endeavor to learn guitar. This is my take and its probably wrong:

To capture the sound you are hearing, but not playing, you need to reorganize your approach to learning his style. Proverbially speaking, focus not on whole songs; rather, focus on techniques he employs in multiple songs. For example, when holding down a D chord on the 2nd and 3rd string, he uses a lot of hammer ons and pull-offs on the first string. Check out County Road and see if you can rock it, but be sure to allow some time to master it. I'm talking calendar days, not practice time. Regardless of how much you practice, the earth has to rotate a few times for music to travel from your brain to your fingertips. Good luck!
