    Default Glossy necks

I know alot of people don't like glossy necks and they sand the back of theirs. I guess I'm one of the few who actually prefers a glossy neck. No way would I take sandpaper to a thousand+ dollar Les Paul anyway. Plus I really don't believe the myth that you get better tone from a neck with the poly sanded off. Glossy necks rock.

I don't mind em. They don't completely turn me off but I don't really prefer em.

It doesn't have as much to do with tone, as it does with feel. I much prefer a satin finish on my necks. But, I've never sanded a glossy finish off of one, either.

I've owned a few Japanese Fenders that were great guitars, but the plasticy finish made them feel like toys to me. I just went over the back of them with some steel wool.

Ha, different strokes I guess! I have one of those Japanese Fenders with the "plasticy" finish. I see what you mean, but I'm a sucker for that glossy finish. I've had this CIJ Fender for a while now and it's made it hard to get used to anything but. I'm happy that the newest standard Fenders have a pretty glossy neck. Playing something like those "Fadded" Gibsons is like a nightmare for me. However, I don't like that glossy finish on an acoustic.

It ain't about the tone of a non-glossed neck. Its all about the feel. In fact my Jackson Soloist Archtop has a gloss finish on the body and an oil finished neck that came stock from the USA Custom Shop. It's the best of both worlds IMO....I wish all my guitars had that combo in fact.

When your on stage sweating your b@lls off that gloss neck starts to feel like Elmers Glue.......not the case with an oiled or satin finished neck....it just feels right IMO. Would I personally sand down the neck of my own guitar? Probably Not. I care to much about resale value to do it.

Both my Strat and my bass have had the finish removed and got the 400/600 grit smoothing job. Joebacca is right on. Nothing sucks more, than sweating and having your hand skipping up and down the neck.

I don't mind gloss. I mind the poly feel. I have 2 guitars, both with nitro finished necks. One is gloss, the other satin, and they both feel great. Poly, not so much....

It's really only gloss nitro that bothers me. It seems to "gum up" way more than gloss poly. It may not have the cheap feel of poly, which is a plus, but it's definitely got more tack. I sanded the finish on the back of my SG's neck with 800 grit.

I don't like glossy necks . . . they just feel stickier. What I really hate is that after playing a semi-gloss/satin neck for a year or so it starts to get all glossy at the back. I'd be surprised if there was any tone difference.

i rub mine down with 0000 steel wool. just takes the sheen off and can be easily buffed up to a gloss if needed.

My hands just don't glide on a glossy neck with out using baby powder or something to combat the seat from your hands.
