Back in the late 80's when Alice Cooper came back with Constrictor, they had been playing "Give It Up" on the radio. The radio/cassete player I had at the time had this Dolby button on it to help with recording, and it worked rather well.
So, of course, the song rolls around again on the playlist and I pop in a tape and record it. It was heavy and crushing, so when I got the money, I bought the tape.
Sounded weak and thin.
I popped my radio-tape back in and it crushed. It was then that I noticed the Dolby button had been Off. To verify this, I put the store-bought tape in side A of the recorder and dubbed it to a blank tap in side B with the Dolby button Off. The entire album was much heavier on that copy than on the original because it wasn't being over-compressed by the Dolby system. Granted this was pretty much clipping and overdriven, but it sounded more like the old Alice, which was good.
