I had a setback last night as a huge blowup with my wife and kids led to my crawling back to food for comfort. I hate to admit this, but I ate an entire box of breaded chicken patties with sauce and three pieces of bread. Whole grain bread, but really, does that matter, lol. Because my diet had been so strict for the whole day, the binge brought my total up to 3084 for the day and it showed on the scale this morning with no weight loss since from yesterday. I weigh myself every morning--I don't believe in the once a week thing. Just like a daily calorie count, I want a daily weight count as well. I wanted to hit 1000 calories, but I was nearly at six miles in a little over two hours and my body had it. I'm pooped
Well, I had mexican food with friends in Albuquerque tonight and then hit the elliptical for a half an hour to continue the rehab on my knee. No beer however. So, little steps. Just trying to keep it off now. Much easier than losing it. You'll be where I am in a year. I know it sounds forever, but it'll go by fast.

Default How many fat guys here? My hand is raised and I'm jumping on the treadmill right now

Took a trip to the Bronx to get a great deal on a brand new Nordictrack C900 treadmill. Again, I'm broke, so I sold some old exercise equipment to buy this one. Store demo it seems, some missing plastic but everything works great. New is $979, I got it for five. As of this morning I'm 5' 11' and 304 lbs, diabetic, and miserable. I can't stand for too long or my legs kill me, and I'm getting numbness in my left hand from diabetic neuropathy. I'm only 47 and I don't want to croak. I've got to enjoy my kids growing up and lots of screaming power chords and solos so I NEED to change now. I'm throwing it out there in public that by the time I'm eligible to get back into school next term to finish my clinicals, I want to have lost at lease sixty pounds. I've lost over a hundred pounds before so I know what to do, although at this age it will be tougher.

Anyone with me? Throwing the MP3 player on the mill and rocking it now. If I don't die, I'll check in later, lol.

Just a curiosity thing . . . I've always wondered why you would pick a treadmill over just running outside. Outside is free, doesn't take up space in your house, the occasional snow/rain/wind won't kill you, you add nothing on your energy/electricity bill . . . your stabilizer muscles have to work harder jogging in the real world than on a featureless conveyer belt, AND you get some variety to look at. Props on trying to get into shape . . . I've just never understood the whole running indoors concept.

for me, treadmill instead of outside is a safety valve ... i too am a fat guy (5'10" 255lbs) with a history of leg/knee/ankle issues from sports when i was young and thin and fit ... being fat only makes them worse ... if i go running outdoors and aggravate an injury, i could be pretty far from home ... safer to be at a gym or home wherer i can get help

also, its a timing thing ... if i want to be running at night, it wouldnt be as safe to do on my dark suburban streets

    good luck to 75 lespaul!

Yeah, my entire 20's working chained to a desk caused me to pack on about 40 lbs. I'm 5'6" and I hover around 205 lbs. Plus, I've got a stocky build to begin with. I don't look horrible, but a am on the "obese" end of the BMI scale. I've been taking a once a week workout class at a local gym but I really do need to do more. I think my worst enemy is portion control.

I don't really notice my weight so much until I play a gig and then see photos of myself. I think "Ugh, that's what I look like?"

I'm 6 foot and 210 pounds, which I know isn't too bad, but I am trying to lose some. Cutting some of the crap out of my diet and getting more aerobic exercise...

Dude, maybe you'd like to lose a few, but that's nowhere near being called a "fat guy". If I had an extra 6" to stretch out, I'd probably be about right.

6'2 254 at the moment. I'm pretty big guy in general, barrel chest, so I will be at the high end of the 'norm' anyway.

I do work out three or so times a week, though. Definitely have been on a get fit kick lately - biking a couple times a week, solo MA workouts a couple of times, and regulalr kung fu ~3 times for a couple of hours at a shot.

Definitely want to get back to 235 as a MAJOR goal. 220 would be ideal for me.

It wouldn't hurt me to get back in the gym and lose about 30lbs. It's really hard for me to keep a consistent weight to where I'm not either a little porky, or I start looking really bad....anorexic bad. In my early 20's I got into lifting a lot and it went on for 5-6 years and I really kind of screwed myself. I would have never considered myself as a powerlifter and I didn't have the dietary discipline to be a body builder. The end result was I got really big and blocky on top of an already big frame. Now I've gotten lazy and am getting a good sized belly on me. I'm 6 and 250lbs, but I've also got 52" shoulders and a 19" neck. I've never really been able to drop under 220/210 and look good, my frame just doesn't allow it.

6' 220 lbs. I need to trim back to like 200 over the summer. It gets difficult during the winter here. "A little bit of snow" isn't what we get here. I don't know if you heard, but Fargo was officially named the worst weather city in America lol

Did close to two hours, five miles and according to the machine burned 500 calories. The last 100 calories was so hard, but I wanted that 500. Now that I'm done, I feel fantastic. If I can do this at least four times a week and keep the diet in check, I think I'm going to do very well.

There you have it. Exactly my reasons, plus I have to get my kids from school and watch them until my wife gets home hours later. I can give them dinner and jump on the mill. PLUS, when you walk outside, you can slow down and not even know it reducing the burn. Not so with a treadmill unless you manually slow it down. By the way, I do walk once or twice a week outside as well, but the convenience of this machine is very nice.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone.

That's the kind of workouts I'd like to work up to. I've never done MA, but I would absolutly LOVE to. Not to be able to fight or self defense or anything like that, but for the confidence, physical fitness, and mental stability that it brings. That's awesome stuff Aceman.

I knew I'd put on weight over the past year or so, but last week weighed myself and discovered, to my horror, that I was 203lbs. At 5'10" that's unacceptable. My default weight has been about 180-185 for years, which still isn't slim, and at times I've been as low as 165. I'd like very much to get back there.

The other concern is as you get older the unevenness of the road can cause unnecessary stress on your knees.

Good luck! I've been getting back into running but it's to get my physical condition up. Do you keep a running log? I've found that to be a pretty good motivator once you've been at it for a month or so.
