If you had to put any 3 pickups in a guitar, what would they be?

i built a guitar with a jaguar antiquity II in the neck, a custom wound a2 humbucker next to that and a reverse slant tapped 9.6k/6.6k a2 strat/tele pup in the bridge.

the humbucker is basically in about the same position as it would be on a 24 fret guitar

switching is a little different too

three way blade switch, master volume and push/pull tone pot to tap the bridge pup for the single coils

3 way gibson style switch to select single coils/both/humbucker

volume for the humbucker

that setup lets me get all the tones i need. a pretty strat like neck tone, a bright tele bridge tone, a fatter thicker stronger tele bridge tone, a tele middle sound, a warm big humbucker neck tone and then some other cool tones as well.

I put pickups in a guitar based on the tonewood.

Not sure what exactly you are asking for..

Is your intent to be a swimming pool route , so you could throw anything in there?
if so, probably a balanced wood like Alder would be your best bet...



based on an Alder guitar, Id have two say you'd need two different prototypes;
1) Hot
Screamin Demon fullsize or Hot Rails single , Vintage Rails, Lil Demon or Cool rails neck
OR STkS-9B, STK-S4M, STk-S6N

Possibly I'd go with a qaurter Pound Bridge, SSL2 middle, and SSL-6 neck.I

2) Vintage
Vintage Seth or '59 bridge, and neck, OR 2 or 3 P90's,
or if I was going H/S/S I'd maybe go 59/Lil 59/Lil /59.

zebra pups using gibson's shade of creme (that pinky color), solid brushed silver bases, zephyr silver coils, triple wax potted, epoxy sealed (ala Iommi), cryogenic treatment or whatnot, allen screw mounting bolts, invader styled black oxide allen screw pole pieces (nickel plated, tho), wound to a sh-1b/n specs, vintage braided conductor wire and alnico 2 magnets. NO SD LOGO.

and a similar humbucker rigged so that it mounts in the sound hole of my j-200.

3 pickups? a fullshred/jb hybrid in the bridge, a fullshred-neck/stagmag hybrid in the neck, and the phat staple in the middle.

but if I could have FOUR pickups, I'd have a p90 in bridge and neck, a strat single in the neck and a tele-bridge single in the bridge. oh, five pickups could work too; a minihumbucker in the middle. Or why not swap out a p90 for a mini? in the bridge perhaps?

Probably a p90 neck, a vintage sounding strat middle, and an over wound humbucker bridge. Probably a custom 8.

Then I'd go nuts with switching options and and a blackouts preamp, wiring up the neck and middle pickups as the neck humbucker. Yeah, Series/split/parallel options, bridge activation switch, and a 4pdt switch to go between active and passive setups. It could very well end up being the last guitar I ever needed. It would also set the high score for switching options in a guitar.

It just depends. I love all kinds of pickups.

I'd keep it simple though...P90/S/S, Powertron/S/S or real Tele bridge/S/S. Depending on how strong the bridge pickups are I might spring for P90s instead of singles...if I'm in a single coil mood.

If I wanted humbuckers and wasn't going for HSH or HH, I'd copy a note from the PRS book and go full humbucker/mini hum/mini hum. Well, they say their Narrowfields aren't exactly mini hums, but they do look similar.

As long as it's cool and it works. Crazy for the sake of crazy is crazy. Crazy for the sake of awesome is awesome.

Edit: Now that I think about it, I saw Tom Anderson do that before PRS...unless PRS made a one off before.

P90's wif taps. I gotts a set utilizing Strat spec taps. Under-wound 90's are schweet.

Rod mags in the middle pup for some monster Fender 'Boink'.

The neck could simply be a 90 with a blade rather than screws for the Charlie Christian vibe. An option is to add allen screws between the pole screws and locate the mounting screws out to the corners like a Alnico P90 of old.

All pups the same size and appearance other than poles/blade.

i heard of someone once, who had a strat. Now in this strat, he had 3 fender stratocaster pickups....you could try this

LP type with 3 pickups would be a Super D or Dirty Fingers/P90 or SDS-1/Paf Pro.

Tele would be Tele QP/P90 or SDS-1/T-Top or Jazz

24 fret mahogany SS type (or SG) would be WCR Ironman or El Diablo or Super3 or Tone Zone/P90 or SDS-1/Liquifire or Air Norton

Strat type, uh, uh, Hot Rails/SDS-1/Air Norton S

I'm just throwing a guess at the strat, chances are not high that I will ever own a plain old strat again. The only middle pickups I've ever liked were P90's or the SDS-1, so no reason for anything else in any application. The LP is all I'm missing from the others. So, yeah, I can't believe I just a wasted couple minutes writing this.
