    Default CC for Metal?

is the custom custom versatile enough to do heavy metal music?

I suppose it depends on what you mean by heavy metal...
There are so many genre names now I can't keep them straight.

I use a Custom Custom and think it works well for **** like Sabbath, Clutch, Kyuss... even some Metallica every now and again.
I think it pulls it off very well, as it's not as aggro as some "distortion" or really hot pickups.

because im trying to choose between a JB and a Custom... but, the JB may be a bit too thin and "shrill" for my tastes, and with the Custom, ceramic mags arent really my thing.

hehehe... what i mean by heavy metal: metallica, megadeth, killswitch engage, soilwork, ozzy type of stuff...

In the right guitar (that is, a bright one) it'll do metal fine.

I don't know anything about the CC but the Custom is great for metal. I like it more than the JB which is also awesome.
Before I got the Custom I had some reservations about the ceramic magnet too but I got it anyway and couldn't be happier. This pickup is chunky, chunky Cleans aren't anything to write home about though.
If you insist on versatility I'd suggest the JB, it will do everything.

btw. the JB's lead tone is far from shrill, it's a lot fatter that the Custom's lead tone IMHO. But for riffing and palm mutes the Custom rules.

I agree...in abright guitar the CC could probably pull it off.

It is very fat and smooth with wide pronounced mids tho.

Not a lot of sizzle on top unless it's set very close to the strings...which is how I use it.

As for the JB being thin...NO WAY.

As for the JB being shrill...well, there is that peak in what I hear as the upper mids/lower treble frequencies. But I don't hear it as being shrill.

Very penetrating is more like it!

its seems that i go against the grain on this topic

i once had a CC in my Gibbo V

i found it to be way too middy for metal
i also felt the bass wasnt tight enough for big chugging riffs

the highs were just wat i wanted tho - singing and warm - i love that for lead

but overall, it felt too vintagey and middy for my metal tastes
    u might find it different
send me a PM if you would like a comparison of what the CC is like compared to a C5 in a flying V - the C5 has awesome tight bass, lowered mids and great highs

    chek it!

    gday Destructone!

good to see another prestige user

pickup wise, it all depends one what tones ur into
what sort of band's tones do u admire?
because, id be a bit concerned with the CC in the RG if u wanted to have tones ala metallica, dream theater etc. Because, in my V, i found the bass not loud enough. and therfore, in the RG (on the assumption that RGs have a thinner tone and less natural bass than a gibbo V) the overall tone would be lacking bass.

BUT - if ur looking for a great VH tone, that combo could work!!

But i am a big advocate of the C5 - should sound great.

also, the PG in the neck - if u like the PAF Pro, i dont think u should change it - if it aint broke....

im a fan of the tone zone - for some odd reason! heheh sounds like sh!te clean, but with lots of gain, it rocks pretty hard

in the next few days ill post some clips of the C5 and ill try and find some of the CC that i recorded too

    Take it easy

well, i currently have two les pauls with EMG's... so i already have that active thing goin'... i want something that sounds the same as the 81, but with more bass and more cut... maybe a JB would fit the bill?!

i have no beef with the tone zone but whenever i use it live it shakes up my entire rig... too bassy! but if i turn the bass down, the PAF pro would sound too thin, like its in the bridge!

Yes it's a good pickup for metal. It really screams with the right amp and guitar.
