I imagine that, in many cases, it's not a question of ROI but rather one of vanity. I'd be willing to bet that for many inductees, the thought process goes something like, "I have enough money, but what I haven't had lately is a nice ego boost. Oh, look, it's been 25 years -- I can buy one!"

First of all, the inductees should be chosen by the fans and not the critcs and Jann Wenner. Having said that, here is my top 5 list of acts who should be in the Hall;

1. Kiss - They would've been last year if it wasn't for ****ing ABBA!

2. Deep Purple-C'mon, I mean they bought us Ritchie Blackmore!

3. Mott The Hoople-One of the 1st Glam Rock bands with IMO, the greatest teen angst anthem "All The Young Dudes!".
4. Ted Nugent- " Wang ,Dang, Sweet Poontang!', Need I say more?

5. Rush- The greatest thing to come out of Canada since Cold Beer, Eh?

The problem with the R&R hall of fame is that every genre of music from pop to thrash has co-opted it as THEIR hall of fame. Of course, the name does not help...

It is a pop music hall of fame.

And for the record - ABBA is HUGE and absolutely deserves to be there.

It is laughable that Rush hasn't made it (they're only the original "progressive" rock band...yeesh...). Sting I think made just as much of an impact with music as a solo artist as he did in the Police (and there are some artists that have been inducted more than once so I elect him as a smart candidate). Nirvana caused a whole new generation of rock. Depeche Mode made electronic music cool. Guns and Roses is one of the most well known rock bands in history.
