    Default Acoustic recording issues

I'm trying to record a tune for a fiml sountrack, but I'm having some problem with the acoustic guitar. I run everything through a Line 6 Toneport UX-2 (haters, don't bother, I've already heard it all) into Adobe Audition. Now, I usually only record electrics, so using mics has never ben an issue, but I need an acoustic guitar on this track, and all I've got to record with is a borrowd Shure SM 58.

The problem is, the acceptable span for guitar-to-mic space seems to be very, very narrow - the bridge between notes being barely audible and distorting is so short, I have to be very close to the mic to pick up single picked notes, whereas strumming seems to always be on edge. If I set the distance for smoother strumming, it works fine, but then just a slightly harder stroke will send the signal spiking. If I try to add some distance or roll off some gain from the signal, the softer strumming is barely audible.

    Suggestions?

One thing I can think of is sending te signal from POD Farm to Adobe Audition as Processed, Then setup a compressor in the chain , that would tame the levels a bit especially for the harder strummed part, You might be able to get some decent level that way

Make the recording with the very low volume levels (as high as you can get them without clipping of course) and apply a compressor through the Audition software afterwards. This way you can tweak the compression to your heart's content to get the evenness of sound you're looking for.
