I took the cover of one and what do I find? A cube of wax just overlapping the pickup in the shape of the cover.

It's more than just sloppy potting.
I will try and post pics if i can get my webcam to work.

I'll inform the news networks.
Every love that made me lose my reasoning. Every chord that made my conscience ache. Every day spent counting hours. Well, none of them comes close to singing back a song inside my head.
I remember calloused hands and paint-stained jeans, and I remember safe-as-houses self-belief.

What no epoxy?

Theoretically, the sound should be the same as if it only had enough wax to immobilize the windings. I figure they suck because they're halfass Epi pups.

Epi p'ups are bad. I mean, REALLY bad. Specially the neck one. Most are wound way too hot, the wire layed way too tight with the highest TPL their CNC winder can take. I've used two they came with an Epi G-400 Custom. They measured 8.35K and 8.56K. See?
Plus, the materials are NOT the best ever... I've tried mag swapping and assemble'em with good baseplates, slugs and screws.
They got better, but didn't cut it as neck p'ups, the position they should've been designed for. As bridge p'ups they were a bit better, but even with good materials they didn't sound very good. No warmth, no string separation, they were both muddy and shrill.
That taught me the importance of the winding... the hard way!

That makes mine look good. See post #27 in this old thread from last year. http://www.seymourduncan.com/forum/s...iphone+Lucille

I've never seen a pup like that. All I can say is WOW!
I've got six Epi guitars that I've replaced pups on and none of them were like that. They all looked like any SD pup...just slight wax potting around the actual coil windings, covered by the tape.
I'm no Epi pup fan, but so far all of my guitars have been excellent quality (better than 6 Gibsons I've had...yes, I said BETTER). After changing their rotten pups with Duncans, and with some mag swapping, now they are perfect.

Just thinking. For there to be a layer of wax that thick, there must have been a corresponding air gap between the tops of the bobbins and the cover. Shee-yit construction or what?!

It looks like a decorative soap for every guitarists' bathroom.

hahaha!! That's a good one. You're right!!
I'd love to have some soapbars that look like wax-potted pups. This one is a great example of what they would look like.

Epiphone pups are made by Gibson and shipped to Qingdao, China for installation into Epiphone guitars.

Friends don't let friends play Epiphones with stock pickups. The tone is a terrible thing to waste. This PSA brought to u by PickupSwap International.
