Default Quick n' easy question about strat pups

    Hey guys,

Been MIA for awhile...just heard Carl Verheyan and was blown away by the tone of his vintage strats(through vintage plexi's, vox, etc. The guys rig is mind boggling). Made me want to redelve into finding a better neck pup for my strat. It seems the SSL-1 or Texas Hot are probably the best bet for classic strat tone. Which one do you guys like better for the quintessential vintage strat tone? I want good blues, funky, glassy, quaky strat neck. Cool?

search for the ultimate strat tone...it is a thread Lew did a while back...if you play your strats with 3 single coils and a vintage trem...it will answer ALL your questions...it goes into every thing from bothe the Antiquitys to SSL-1 an 2's APS1's and 2's twangbanger, vintage Fender pups, Fralin Steel pole pups...give it a shot

Personally, I like the alnico 5 Antiquity Surfer, Duncan SSL-1 and Fralin Vintage Hots best.

Excellant vintage Strat tone from any of those. The SSL-1's are a steal!

I like the alnico 2 Ant Texas Hots alot too, especially the bridge Texas Hot Custom, but they have a slightly warmer tone with less glass on top and pluckier mids than any of the actual vintage Strat pickups I've owned.

Thanks, guys. 3 votes for antiquites. From what Lew said it sounds like the Surfer is more what I'm looking for in regards to tone. I think it is interesting that the Texas Hot, which is described as vintage as vintage gets on this website doesn't sound as much like a 50s strat.

One other question I know has been covered 40 million times: If I went with the SSL, would I be better off with the SSL-2 since I have a modern strat with a flatter radius?

    Thanks guys!

    Mike
