You know, I've been sat here thinking about this. I followed the build thread on the Tele forum, where the guy built a replica of a 59 Les Paul. That was impressive, but when you compare the 2 threads and builds and consider that one was by a luthier at the top of his game and the other by a guy with little experience in his garden (no offence Crusty!), this is such a fabulous achievement!
Holy ****ing **** this is amazing.
If I weren't so lazy and weren't such a girl, I'd try it.
Maybe.

Wonderful looking guitar!!! Good on ya!
Aint no pro but I know what I like....
Guitar to sound output:
Hamer, Dean, or Various, Levy's straps, Dunlop straplock/picks, Daddarrio strings 10-46, Duncan, Dimarzio, Mogami, Monster, MojoDrive pedal on occasion, Marshall, Crate, Vox, Mesa Boogie, Black Shadow Celestions, Eminence,..
The sun is out today and i can get another coat of the red-tinted clear on, so i'm sanding out the orangepeel (it's coming away easily with fine paper, 320 and 400 freecut) and then will shoot a coat. I'll use my small touch-up gun this time and put more red into the lacquer ; I want to get the colour deep without using too many coats.
At the moment it's kind of red-brown, because this clear actually lends a brown tint, which is a bit of a nuisance .... it would be ideal for acoustic guitars on the natural woods, but it's kind of subverting the red i'm trying to achieve. I'll see how this next coat goes, and i'll try to flood out the brown effect of the clear with heaps of red tinter.
Hopefully i'll have some pics of it in a few hours. If i can get a good red today, i can do the black burst tomorrow.

This is one hell of a project your tackling here, Crusty. Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see the finished product!![]()

Nice job! I love watching these threads.. I have a plank waiting for me to start hacking away.. you've inspired me to get started.

I was wondering when you were going to finally post about this. I've kept my mouth shut for months it seems.
Haha yeah, it has been a long time .... about six months i think ... I think it was November 2010 when the neck arrived. It all seems a blur now, especially with a face full of paint fumes.
I just shot another coat of red clear with the smaller touch-up gun, much better result. Hopefully when it dries off a little bit i can take it out into the light and get some better pics, the flash is too strong and makes the colour look orange, and without flash where i'm spraying, it's too dark.
I loaded this coat up with more red tinters and it's looking much closer .... more pics shortly ......

Looking good, Crusty! I hope the colour comes out like you intended. Vault?

crusty is my hero
Okay, here's this afternoon's effort. I used the smaller touch-up gun and more thinners and red tinter in the lacquer. I finished off with a very thin coat, almost straight thinners. That allowed me to get a much smoother finish with a lot less orange peel.
I took her out the back into the fading daylight for some pics without the flash. This is red enough now for me to apply the black burst on the front, and then probably one more red-tinted clear coat on top of that. Then there will be a couple of coats of straight clear to seal it all up.

Honestly I am blown away. Incredible work.
You did a fantastic job on the top carve.
I love also that you made the effort of adding / sculpting that little piece of wood to complete the neck heel.
Just stellar. Thank you for posting this.

This is an awesome thread I will love to see how this turns out. Love your color choice by the way.
