Default More annoying amp questions from JeffB

In my quest for a new amp I have been contemplating selling my 1987 reissue and a few other things and invest in a more portable tube combo since I'm not totally overwhelmed with the modeling and solid state choices I have in a $400 budget.

I'd prefer a Marshall TSL, Rivera or VHT, but they are out of my price range.

So does anyone have any experience with the Peavey XXX 40 watt combo or the 5150 60 watt combo? Or these two amp series in general for that matter?

My budget needs to stay right around 9 bills.

Also are there any decent Mesa's for that kind of dinero? I'm looking for high gain, but not that scooped mids metal sound of today.

EDIT: Ugh..the 5150 is not so portable..I just saw the weight...yikes...

OK..any info on a decent high gain marshallesque sounding tube combo in the 700-900 price range is appreciated. Would prefer someting around 40-60 watts

The XXX is a marvelous amp, but get the 1x12 60W version, you're going to want the crunch channel with it's own EQ!

It can do 80's hairmetal, thrash metal, deathmetal, and even numetal. The only other amp I'd want is a 5150, just because it has that sound that defines it as a 5150.

+100 on that Fender Blues Deluxe. If i weren't getting a Custom Vibrolux, and had a tighter budget, thatd be the one.

    Bumpity

I'm a little leary of buying used..especially through Ebay, but those 40 watt rivera combos are very tempting. I've always liked Rivera stuff...just never pulled the trigger on one.

The fenders sound great, but not really my style..not "british" enough for me

+1000 on the Blues Deluxe. Ive had mine for about 3 weeks now and its wonderful, suprisingly portable and more than loud enough. And the tone...mmm. My only sugestion would be to replace the tubes. Other than that, good luck on your hunt.
