Default NGD: Tele GAS Finally Sated

Yup. I've been craving some sweet Tele action for quite a while now. I spotted this on Ebay a while ago and I was going back and forth on whether or not to pick it up. A new guitar really wasn't at the top of my gear priorities, never mind my life priorities. But left handed Teles with maple fretboards and the exact colour I wanted come up pretty rarely on the used market so I thought "F*ck it", waited until near the end of the auction, put in a bid that I was certain would be outdone and then, surprisingly, won it.

So here we go. Not much to say about this, really. I'm sure you all know the specs by now. It's a 2004 Mexican Standard. Alder body, maple neck and fretboard. It's a little grimey and could do with a bit of tweaking intonation-wise and some new strings, but other than that and one little ding down by the jack socket (which is being a right wee twat, by the way) it's in pretty sweet condition. Frets are in great condition and the medium action is pretty much the perfect height for me. Nice, comfortable neck. Apart from the finicky jack socket, the electronics are sound, with no crackle on the pots or switch. The stock pups are pretty decent but I'm definitely going to replace them at some point. Recommendations would be cool.

I'm also thinking about a black pickguard. We'll see.

Here's the stock pictures from the auction. I'll take some more later if I get the chance....

    Nobody cares!!!!

Didn't Simon F or Stevie get one just like this but not left handed? It looks sweet. I have been gasing for one of those Squier vintage vibe ones.

As a sidenote; this is the first time I've owned or put some serious play time into a guitar with a maple fretboard. I wanted one pretty much just for the aesthetics but god damn, that **** feels great.

I dunno, actually. I know Rich has one in pretty much the same colour that he converted into an esquire (and then back again, I think).

Also, I'm considering scratching the words 'STFU Bones' into the front of it with an ice-pick. I think it'll look pretty snazzy and not at all psychotic.

    Thanks, man.

It sounds a bit dumb, but that colour was the thing that tipped me right over the edge to typing in my Paypal details and hitting send. I love that shade of blue on a Tele.

Nice Tele, congrats ! Apart from the obvious problem of all the hardware seemingly fitted to the back of the body instead of the front, it looks excellent.

May i suggest investing in an Electrosocket to replace the regular jack cup arrangement ? Just be sure to get the right type .... some take a Switchcraft jack, others take a metric thread .... if unsure, buy a combination Electrosocket and jack together, they're not very expensive, but they are a far superior fitting to solve the classic Tele output socket problems.

Funny you should mention that. I was considering starting a thread on them, myself. I've heard them mentioned in discussions about Teles since forever, but I'm still not exactly clear on what purpose they serve. Do they just stop the nut around the jack from loosening or something?

Sorry, this is my first Tele. I've played them before but never owned one, so all their little idiosyncracies are completely new to me.

Oh, and thanks for the congratulations.

The original pressed-metal cup mates up to a weird little strip of metal that is wedged into the hole in the side of the body, and the thread/nut of the jack socket holds it all together. Of course they come loose and the whole assembly wobbles around and sooner or later the wire gets damaged.

The Electrosocket requires you to pull out the little metal strip from inside the hole to install it. It (the E/S) is a thick chunk of metal with a thread cut into it for the jack socket, so the socket screws into the Electrosocket from the back (inside) without needing the nut on the outside. That assembly is then inserted into the hole (after the wires are attached) and two small screws are inserted at an angle through the outer 'dish' of the Electrosocket into the wood.

It's not so easy to describe, but a quick look at a couple of pics of an Electrosocket will explain it much better than words. Basically it has been developed as a simple and superior way to solve the very common problem that Tele's have re. the output socket arrangement.

Plenty of guys just pop off the original jack cup, and put on a LP type, because they are just more stable over longer times.

Anywho, welcome to the club. You're ruined for other guitar designs, now.

Ahhhh, that makes a tonne of sense. Thanks for explaining that one, man. One of those little things is going straight on the shopping list. I think I'm gonna have to resolder the jack anyway, so I may as well do it properly.

    I appreciate that.

Yeah, that could work too. I think I'd rather drill two small holes for an electrosocket than drill four right on the edge of the guitar for a LP plate, though.

    Thanks, dude.

Yeah, your loss on that one.

Cheers for the laugh and the congratulations, which I'll assume are implied.

I'm surprised Rich S. hasn't splooged all over this thread yet.

And by splooged, I mean commented positively.
