Peavey Classic 30/50 vs. Traynor YCV 40/80

i just got this from the peavey site from the classic 50

Three 12AX7 preamp tubes
Four EL 84 power amp tubes

I think that at one time Peavey made the C50 witht 6L6 power tubes. I remember reading a review or two at Harmony Central where a few folks had listed the features, and they mentioned 2, 6L6 power tubes. Kinda hard to get 2, 6L6's confused with 4, EL84's.

Back in the 70's, Peavey made an amp called the Classic. Even though the name is similar, it's a totally different amp than the Classic 30/50. It's a 50 watt 6L6 amp, and they supposedly sound pretty good.

Currently I own the following amps:

Blues Jr.
Peavey Classic 30
Fender DRRI
Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

The Blues Jr. has been my rehearsal amp for about 9 months now. I bought it to modify it and it didn't let me down. Despite alot of guff from other users I maintain that it sounds much more like a Blackface Fender with the mods.

I keep playing gigs with my Classic 30 and Hot Rod Deluxe and thinking to myself "Eh....the Blues Jr. could of handled this with no problem". The true amount of necessary volume I think is very overestimated by alot of people. As someone who was notorious for it in the past I'm starting the long road of recovery.

I wasn't a huge fan of the Hot Rod Deluxes second channel until a local tech went over mine for a repair and I think did some modding. It's a much different amp than when I got it and much more usable. Still I wouldn't want to be married to that second channel for an entire three set night. There's plenty of headroom but you really better love your pedals if you're going to do that sort of thing.

I played the Classic 30 last night in a 90-person capacity room and barely had the second channel up past 1/3. Hearing some natural tube saturation was kinda nice and being able to control it with the master volume makes me jittery to haul out the DRRI for gigs. But that amp is where the tone-monster lives.

Opinions are subjective and on a place like this with so many folks with so many opinions and styles it's hard to really nail anything down.

My Peavey Classic is 50 watts, but I guess it's not the "Classic 50". It does sound great though. I took it out of town, found a wide spot on the side of the road, and cranked it up full blast. I used a power inverter for power from my battery. I had it on my tailgate. Man, I could feel the concussion hitting my chest. It was so cool. Got some cool overdrive and feedback.

I used it at blues jams for about 6 months, now I have a Classic 20. This one says Classic 20 right on it so it's not like the "Classic". It's all tube - 2 EL84s and 2 12AX7s. This little amp can't help but sound good. Only thing I don't like is that it has no reverb. I use a Digitech Digital Reverb, which is ok, but I'd rather have the springs. I'd like to use the spring tank from my Blazer 158 (15 watt ss), but I would need a schematic to go by.

the classic 50 is awesome. I went to a concert at my school yesterday and one of the bands were playing a classic 50 through a marshall 4x12 and it sounded incredible.

Traynors are good little amps . .. I've played the YCV 40 WR and the YCV 80 (Couldn't really crank it up in the store, and I think that it's too loud for anything that I want to do with it anyway). WIth the 12 inch extension cab, the YCV 40 sounds fantastic.
