I have an EMG 81b 85n combo in my agathis LTD F-100 FM and that guitar has 10 sets of nutz!! I tried them in my basswood Dean ML Undertaker and they sounded like turds. So I put my Duncan Distortion back in and BAM!!! That git-fiddle now has it's 10 sets back! Wood does make a difference but, as Frehley said, some people put too much emphasis on that when buying a guitar. My 2 cents. Follow yer ears, they won't lie to ya.

i made this one just to show what DD does.Hear it.It is not a production wonder like your heroes ,but it will show you clearly what DD is doing. The mids baby. The mids are the key to sound "organic" , "warm" and "punchy".And they are the only way to cut thru the mix!!!And in my opinion ,Emg 81 is not the real deal to do that,Try 60!!!
WTF? Zombie thread!
I didnt bring this back to life BTW, it was at the top of the first page (no stickies either, somethings gone down...)
Wire them all together in series on one guitar. That'll show 'em.

Why would anyone recommend an 81 to someone? EMG's worst pup IMO. The distortion has the balls of an ox required. EMG's are basically only good for detuned, heavily saturated, metal. Every crack-head teenager in an emo-core band has them. The majority of seasoned (or smarter) metal-heads run SD's or Dimarzios.

Have you played an 81? I would seriously look at the DD or even the custom before you put in the EMG. Not knocking them, but I don't like them at all. Some people really do. They sound very synthetic and compressed. Once you play a good passive you may change your mind. It's not a gain thing at all, it's a tone thing. Passives sound more organic an to me can sound louder. I have played several guitars through several different amps and I cannot get an 81 to sound good to me. I have owned several guitars with EMG's and i changed them all. Cleans are terrible and they are kind of a one way street. But again, lots of hit records were recorded with them so try them out first
