That's a good question. Usually one of two ways: in the first, the wax seal gets broken. Often when someone is loosening screws or sometimes from the guitar getting jostled. It's not common, but remember, those pickups are over 25 years old and the guitar is very well played.
The other way is if a guitar is left in a hot car in the summer or some other place with the temperature goes above 155 degrees Fahrenheit. That can cause the wax to melt out of the pickups.
BTW, if any of you have a pickup that goes microphonic, Seymour and MJ can do for you what they did for Slash. But please just send in the pickups rather than the whole guitar.
