Okay are the Antiquities supposed to be a step above say the SSL-1 and SSL-5 in terms of materials and sound? Are they handwound? Can anyone give any first hand experiences with these pickups?

I'm thinking of trying two regular Surfers in the neck and middle with the higher output custom bridge version in the bridge.

Yes, it is true. In a decent guitar, the Ants come across as consistently superior to the nearest equivalent regular production line models. Be aware, however, that this is a Law Of Diminishing Returns thang. The Ants are a percentage more believable than the regular production but not necessarily in direct proportion to the price difference.

As always, with pickups and guitar sounds, some of this is subjective.

On my Seymourised Fender CIJ Jaguar, I settled on the Ant neck PU pretty quickly. For the bridge position, I changed between an Ant II, an SJAG-1 and an SSL-3T Stratocaster pickup before eventually settling on the Ant II. The "nasty" edge of the SJAG-1 almost won through.

Alnico V magnets in the Surfers I think.

I've used both SSL1's and Surfers, and I must say I do like the Surfers a touch better.
I have the surfer set, with the custom bridge in my Ami Dlx Strat and it's truly a great sounding guitar.
That said, I've had the SSL1's in a MIJ strat and they were also very stratty.
So, are the surfers "Better"? I dunno. They are great, but I honestly have had no complaints from the SD standard line of pickups.
I've never used an SSL5, so I can't comment on that pickup.
