This comes from the lack of knowledge of the terms. You said you had a pref for which coil of the 59/custom hybrid had the screws only when you have a setting to split the coil. Do you also have a favorite when you make the 59/Jazz neck when you have a coil split setting? My Schecter has a 59 neck and the 4th position splits the coil.Originally Posted by BachToRock

I meant the coil with the screws in it that you refer to early in this thread.
"The main difference is if you wire up a split switch... the Custom Coil sounds better as the split coil... it's around 7.2k which is really nice. That said... it will be Brighter when in split mode if you use the Custom screw/59 slug..."
Which screw and which slug do you prefer for the 59/jazz neck hybrid whis a split switch?
I'm just trying to educate myself. I admit that I don't know the names of all of the parts of a pickup. I am open to a good link that breaks one down and shows the parts and describes how each part works. Heck, until I saw your pictures I thought the magnet was inside the coil.

I apologize... I thought you were insinuating my "lack of knowledge of the terms"
I am getting old and have had a glass or three of wine, so I might not be at the peak level of perception at the moment...
The SLUG coil is the default active coil when splitting a Duncan humbucker...
It is a matter of personal taste when considering which sounds "best"... I will always state my personal opinion, but somebody else might prefer otherwise.
That said, both the Jazz Coil and 59 Coil sound great when split since they are pretty similar... the Jazz being a bit more articulate...

No way. I'm the weed-hopper here learning from the master (and I'm a good 8 yrs older, too). I've always been afraid to tear apart a pickup but you make it look so easy that I'm willing to try. I should've done some research on exact names of the parts first. All's cool. And a sincere Thank You for your advice, opinions and help.

I thought you might just be having server problems. I read over your initial post numerous times when you had the pictures, so I've got it pretty much in my head.
I do have a question, though. My first attempt is going to be with a 59 neck/jazz hybrid.
1) When I pull these apart with wiring (including colors) be identical on both sides?
2) If so, its just a matter of switching the two slug coils and soldering up the same as it was originally, only with the new coil in place. Is this correct?

When you take the tape off, you'll see that both coils have a black and a white wire. It will be the same on all Duncan pups. If you decide to remove the slug coil, you'll be disconnecting another black and white wire. (From the 4-conductor.) If you remove the screw coil, you'll be disconnecting a red and green wire.
Just make a note on a piece of paper which wires went where before you unsolder them. Then connect the new coil the same way. Its really not so complicated once you get into it and see whats going on.

I'm used to (I think the term is) tinning the wires before soldering. Would you recommend doing that for this kind of job? Also, would it add a measure of safety to put an alligator clip on the wire (between the soldering spot and the coil) to help absorb heat if I do get it a smidge too hot?

Has anyone tried an F Spaced coil with a regular coil, now that's a hybrid. Magnetic field all over the place. No place the string can go to hide.

Hola B2R & other gurus.
Attached is a photo of my mid operation pups and I want to be sure before I do the final soldering of exactly what I'm doing!!
I will be using the pickup on the left which is the custom custom with the '59 slug coil added (might drop the other in the bridge of my PRS just to see what it's like)
This is how I "think" the wiring should go from reading your posts.....
The #s refer to the photo I have attached..
----CC A2 based hybrid pup (with SD logo)---
#1 black lead from the bottom of the 59 coil should be soldered to #4 the black lead from the CC coil.
#2 black lead from the wound part of the 59 coil should be soldered to #3 the white lead from the CC coil
----59 A5 based hybrid pup----
#5 white lead from the CC coil should be soldered to #7 black lead from the 59 coil.
#6 black lead from the CC coil should be soldered to #8 fat black lead from the 59 coil
