Yep, I never found it bright, but I put it into Marshalls. I'm thinking the folks with Maple guitars into Fender cleans might find it a bit bright. The '78 ripped right through my skull. Screech! The only pickup that I pulled out faster was the Screamin' Demon.
Yeah, dunno what I was thinking on that one. I'd hoped for "mojo" and a little "scatterwinding" and "3Dness" (all of which I asked for in my request), but in the end, a Custom is a Custom and a Full Shred is a Full Shred.
The FS set had chrome poles and MJ had to order 'em special. I thought that was funny because I had an old FS with chrome poles stock.

I have a Crazy 8 (AKA yikes this will melt your face off) and a '78. Both are great pickups.
Grapeskeletons I agree it is just one part of the chain, but the fact you ripped it out means you recognize how important the pickup is in that chain. As a quick side note I just got in the new antiquity JB/Jazz set and I'll be installing those this weekend; I'm a huge fan of the JB myself and can't wait to give this 'tweaked' version a try.
I myself think the '78 is an outstanding pickup in the right guitar plugged into the right amp with the right speakers. My setup using that pup is: USA Standard Strat with maple neck into Mesa Dual Rec into Marshall 1960A cab with cross loaded V30's and G12H30's. Sounds awesome there.

1976 Strat (Antiquity 1 set)
Fender, Mesa, Marshall Amps

I got a pair of phat Staples. They're awesome. The custom shop is pricey, so I haven't done it again (also, don't have a need for more pickups right now.) But if I had infinite amounts of money, I'd have a lot of custom shop pickups.

My Godin LGXSA
It from the factory came equipped with at least one custom made SD pup:
Quote from Godin :
" Seymour himself selected these pickups for us and chose a Jazz II for the neck position and put a new magnet in the Custom Custom for the bridge position. This pickup is unique to Godin and is arguably a Custom Custom Custom. "
It would be interesting if SD would comment on what they think about the Custom Custom Custom now after it being in production almost 10 years .
The different magnet used in this CCC is akin to what other type pup's sound ?
Does anyone have an idea ?
Is this pup the incarnation of a mod that a well known Blues / Classic Rock-N-Roll artists created in England or the USA way back when ?
I got this guitar new in 2003 as my abused brain recollects . Zo far they zounds rrrrrreally good . The real deal types of electric guitar players form the 50s I know and play with live on stage really like them a lot too . I am told the LGXSA has that 50s sound down big time .
No matter if I play through a tube or a great SS amp these pups on my Godin LGXSA sound is really good .

the ccc is what is called the custom 5 and is a normal production pup now.
jazz II might be an alnico II sh2n but im just guessing. or its just a jazz that they called a jazz II cause mistakes like that get made

Hello Jeremy :
I found this on a Youtube search on these pick ups :

It's no wonder I loved the sound of this guitar ( my Godin LGXSA ) the day I first heard it at the music store . I even walked away from the deal at first only to realize it was legit and I made it back to that same store 2 days later and snagged it !
Cool story of Seymour huh , the Tele-Gib he invented is more or less where I am headed towards . Only I want a third humbucker added with coil splitters and phase switches and a midi hexophonic/acoustic pick up(s) .
I don't want much , just a little bit more than most do - - heh heh heh .

I got a set of gold Phat Staples for a black Burny LPC. I could never put in the neck pickup because the route isn't deep enough and I will have to build a custom router rig (the route is too deep for my longest router bit with the standard gear). In the bridge it sounds awesome. It has the Fenderish more intense, not mellowed out reaction that comes from the lack of bottom magnet and passive polepieces, but in a P90ish coil.
I also have a set of Strabro90ties in an Ibanez Blazer. Those were a great buy, in full more (P90 mode) they give this guitar real drive. I ended up not liking the split mode as much as at first. They didn't sound great in a regular Fender Strat but this Blazer has an Ash body and a full brass trem and adds up nicely.
I have a 78 but I had to take it out of my main LP since it got too aggressive when playing through other people's amps. I used it on a friend's DC-5 and it tried to take my head off. Of course I could also learn to play better, that's another solution here.

2 78s, a Custom/Dist hybrid, Brobucker, I've got a CS strat pup that I got from Christian that essentially a non-aged texas hot custom.
Good service, MJ was helpful. Great pups.
I've also order a few shop floor customs.
