so i'm trying to desolder a chrome cover from an HB, but that stuff that attaches the cover to the base plate wont melt.
is it regular solder?
does my Radio Shack soldering iron suck?
is 30 watts iron strong enough?

just found out that the covers are waxed onto the bobbins.
doesn't sound like its a simple process of just melting solder and sliding off the cover
crap crud cripes crikey. my entire project is foiled

You can usually pop them with a flathead screwdriver if you're really careful, emphasis on careful.
Epiphone pickups are horrible for that. I suggest you use a dremel type tool to cut the solder rather than holding the iron on it for three weeks to try and melt it.

I've used an exacto knife for the last 4 I've done (over the past week). It take a while, but it's quiet (important, since I'm usually doing it at night) and pretty easy. Wax being on the pickups is no big deal, you just work the cover off. Of course, then you usually have to clean the wax off the bobbins (easy if you use a hairdryer to soften it up first, other wise, I bit harder).

nah, you can get those suckers off. ive used a razor blade to cut the solder then you should be able to slowly push the cover off. be careful you dont eff up the coil!

I was going to try to convert the SD-59 from a 2 conductor into a 4 conductor.
i'm not too sure about this project now.
seems like there's just a little too much too go wrong. $80 mistake
I would just sell it and buy one thats already 4 conductor (you can get 59s in 4 conductor right? Im sure you can even if they were originally custom ones, they will likely show up on ebay?)

ye, i've never been able to melt the solder either. i use a cutting disc attatchment on a dremel to cut through the solder.

I won't dance in a club like this,
'Cause all the girls are sluts,
And the beer tastes just like piss.

I always use a dremel tool with a small carbide wheel...Does it quick and painless.

you can even use sidecutters for a quick and nasty way of cutting that blob of solder.
