Of course live everyone has to use mids to be heard. I am talking about when you are playing alone by yourself. DO you ever scoop?

I play a lot with EQ to find good recording tones but as far as "scooping" goes, for a smooth sound I tend to cut treble most of the time.

I have tried scooping my mids before but I don't really like it. Sounds like garbled crap.

I almost voted on this poll, then I realized it's silly, and I should point that out instead.

I never scoop my mids, period - but that's when I'm tuning into my regular stable of tones.

There is a rare occasion when I'll get an itch to play some old school death metal, and ONLY then will I drop my mids a bit - but that's pretty much a necessity for achieving that kinda tone.

I love everything from 50s doo wop to deathmetal, so once in awhile, I like to scoop the mids for fun.

I was a "scooper" as a kid. It started out as just on the weekends, with my friends. Then it got it bad.
I started doing it all the time. I did it at social events, or when it was just a few buddies.
I really don't know what happened, It just got out of control. I even started doing it when I was alone, locked in bedroom so my family couldn't see it.

It took a good friend mine to intervene for me to finally see what I was doing to myself, my friends, and my family.

I'm better now, though. It was a long, hard, and trying time in my life, but I made it through. I've been scoop free for 10 years now. I think I'm a better man for it.

I like to try different stuff sometimes when I'm alone. Scooping mids, using random objects as a pick, playing through the Red channel on my TSL… there's no end to the madness.

Guitar is a midrange instrument, so i haven't quite found a need to throw away the sound of the guitar yet, and being left with something that sounds like a dirty bass being played in a high register in unison with a dirty mandolin.

Indeed fenders can be harsh with too many mids (ice pick central!), IMO this is just a reflection of the rich harmonic content they have in those frequencies. People also need to learn how to use their tone controls, as an amp dialed in clean with lots of mids and rolled tone control to taste results in a wonderful place....A dark A2 PAF and heavy flatwounds on maple/maple>alder strat has certainly hit a sweet spot for me!

I noticed that presence, and lots of upper mids can make me 'attack shy' in live situations because of the natural reaction of listening to the effect of my picking. This goes away when I play properly and cleanly though.

I have noticed that there is an acclimation period, and that there are benefits to getting accustomed to having a very defined bright sound. I try to always practice with my amp at low volumes, but with tons of presence, clean tones, and playing through my repertoire. Tons of things jump out that I might have missed if I were playing very dark, or with gain, and I learn how to take advantage of the sonic content that I'm generating, as opposed to muffling it so that nuances or sloppy mistakes/technique can't be heard. When EQ'ing my amp, I really dig in hard on my strat and dial up the amp so that it's bright but not ear piercing when I'm plucking hard in the high registers to establish a tolerable brightness 'ceiling'. I tend to treat a tone setting of 5-8 as home base, and I check my dimed tone sound to make sure that it's not ice picked out.

Why would I scoop my mids when I'm playing with 13's to get MORE of a spectrum to begin with?

Amp settings on my acoustic 200H head are almost always 0 on the notch filter, noon at 60hz, 10 oclock at the 150hz, 2 oclock at 350hz, 800hz is currently at noon, 2k is at 2oclock, 5k is at 3-4 oclock. 350hz is the 'money' frequency that makes notes bloom/wail and affects volume the MOST in my setup, i LOVE the effect that boosting this frequency can have. Too much and notes will ring out and resonate way too hard, too little and the guitar sounds really wimpy and transparent.

Basically tons of mids and highs, sometimes i cut 800 to make 350hz stand out more and this takes some 'woodiness' out of my sound. 150hz is very boomy and sometimes i cut it a bit and boost 60hz to add a subtle 'thump' of air to my attack (this feels VERY GOOD and being aware of the effect that this frequency has on player psychology explains why stacks and big cabs FEEL so good play thru) I use my tone as a master presence control so I never get stuck with frequencies out of my control.

    WOW WHAT A WORDY POST
