Default 2 Alnico Magnets in Duncan Distortion.

    Hey guys,

Just wondering if any one tried that, We know that Duncan Distortion has an over sized ceramic magnet, have any one tried putting 2 normal sized Alnico magnets sticked together to match the space of the over sized one in the duncan distortion.

    Also trying different alnico's together , something like one alnico 5 with alnico 8 , also all other alnico's 2 , 3 , 4 .

Nice idea to mix magnets properties together.

    waiting for your feedback guys.

I'm not so sure you would gain anything by doubling up on the alnicos.

Maybe someone with a better understanding of physics will chime in.

Yes, I've put an A2 in a DD. I used normal-sized spacers with the A2. basically it becomes a JB2.

You think like I do. I just tried a pair of alnicos in a Schaller HB that had a thick ceramic in it, so I put in an A8 and A4 to fill the space (attracting, not repelling). But when I wired it up, the volume was pretty low. Not sure if it was the mags sitting on top of each other, or if there was something else going on, but I pulled out the A4, and plugged up the space with wax, leaving the A8 in. The volume returned to normal. This is not a definitive test by any means; someone else should try it and see what happens. I'd love to find a way to have 2 mags in an HB. This may not be it though.

Yep, stacking bar mags like that weakens the field considerably.

So, it doesn't work to stack alnicos. Can anyone explain what's happening in some detail?

I don't know, you can try it by stacking two magnets and the screwdriver test, it's a lot weaker. Maybe it works if you force them together N-N S-S, but it's probably not stable that way.

It might be like a stacked version of how the 500T/Dirty Fingers/INvader mags are. The 3 mags are on one plane, but the poles are all facing each other. It would be kinda like the Gibson/Iommi with te A2 ad ceramic, maybe?
Though the epoxy, you can see a little metal strap that appears to be holding the magnets together.

I almost did the same thing to my 500T, but instead put an AlNiCo 2 in with normal spacers. suprisingly aggressive still and tight.

Almost all my present pickups are 'frankensteined' now lol.

Maybe I will super glue an a5 and an a2 together north to north and see what happens...
Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Would the A5 deguass the A2, like completely?

I would be afraid of that happening. I asked the same question about P90's, I think it was Frank that said the mags don't degauss each other in a P90 because of the metal poles between them. In this screnario you don't have the ferrous spacer, but maybe you could add a small piece of sheet steel cut the same size as the magnets between them and achieve the desired result.

Seems like more work than it's worth to me. I think outside the pole spacer mags would be a better option.

Well guys , I tried Alnico 8 with alnico 5 and what the hell, the 8 ate the magnetic field of 5 and become like a piece of steel with no magnetic field, haha , nice to try , how can I remagnetize the Alnico 5 again guys , should i Rub it in one way with the Alnico 8 again ??

Thats how the Iommi is. The mounting ears are actually the sides of a piece of flat metal. The two magnets are on either side of the mouning bar. That pickup is constructed weird anyway. They build the pickup inside the flat cover and then epoxy it all together. Then there is also a small A2 magnet in the center, just under the cover, about 7/8" square. Also, I don't know how the large magnets are oriented.

Just sticking them together shouldn't have killed the A5. If it did you have a hella strong A8. Leave them stuck together N to S (side by side, attracted) for a day or so, maybe switch sides in there, the A5 will be fine.

Maybe it would work better if you use two of the same magnet type (A5/A5 or A8/A8) etc.
Also, doesn't the new Gus G. signature set have a double-sized A5 in the bridge pickup? I wonder how one of those mags would sound in a DD/JB?

I wonder if there's any oversized alnico 2.

    2 things:

i have stacked with good results, but also using the smaller ceramic mags on the sides eg invader/500T

look for an old PAF pro, they have A5 mags around the same size (might be the same size, but i haven't compared them)

Ha, I remember someone telling me that before (that PAFPros have big A5's). I wish I still had one, never even thought I could take apart a pickup when I did.
