Default Need 3 pups for fat strat build

    hi

    This is my first post.

I am rebuilding my first guitar. It's basically a fat strat replica. HSS.
It has the common 5 postion selector and a phase switch.

I need suggestions for all 3 pups. You can say im a noob because i have not played guitar in over a decade. So i really need your help.

The most important pup for me will be the humbucker. the two singles can be chosen second.

I am looking for a humbucker that will give a nice bottomy tone, with powerful chug and good with palm muting.
My favorite guitar sound would be Zakk Wylde on the No More Tears album.

Thanks in advance for your help.

PS I really do not like the look of pick ups with the solid metal stip such as the Dimebucker.

I know the regulars must be tired of Noob posts like this, so, I will ask a different question.

With a Duncan Distortion SH-6 in the bridge position, what other Duncan would you pair with it for the Neck position and Middle position?

    Welcome to the Forums Mudkicker!

I don't have any experience with the SH-6, but I have a HSS Strat build that I've been too lazy to assemble out in the shop.

The p'ups I chose are the 59 Trembucker for bridge, an SSL-5 middle and a Quarter Pound neck.

Hey,Mudkicker,I can totally appreciate your aversion to the Dimebucker for aesthetic reasons, but check out the recent "Dimebucker vs. Bill Lawrence" Thread! Unless it's just too bright for your strat, it seems like you can get right into that Zakk/NoMoreTears zone w/o havin' to go the active route? Anyway, good luck, & rest assured that you can still get pretty aggressive w/ a more 'traditional' 'bucker! Check out my recent thread & you'll see I'm still on the fence about the 'ideal' single coil, though! Sorry...

So are you set on the Distortion bridge? Are you playing hard rock? metal? Give us a little info on the guitar too and we can help you out more.

    and the amp!

Also, don't be afraid to go low output if your amp has plenty of gain.

    Hot rails.

    DD + 2x HR == win.

Your state might require a weapons license for it, though.

How "Stratty" do you wish the finished instrument to sound?

    How big is your budget?

I was about to try a red/silver/silver Lace Sensor set in my Fender Am Std Stratocaster. Their Hot Gold set would yield similar results. A purple/emerald/emerald set might also prove interesting.

You'll have to 'match outputs' to a certain degree. If you try a high gain monster like the SH5 in the bridge, you have to have some higher output pickups as singles to match or the volume/output drop will be incredible.

Pick your music style(s) and how versatile you want the bridge H/B to be (lower output is generally more versatile as you can always add more gain later.

    High gain player:
    SH6/Cool rails/Hot rails

    Low gain/output
    Gib 175's option

    Mid gain
    PATB3/ssl 1 or 2(vintage staggered/flat)/ssl 5/6 (custom staggered/flat)
    Custom sh5/cool rails/cool rails

Heaps of possibilities........like way too many really.
If you can give us an idea of the music you'd like to play that might help too

just popped in a Duncan Custom TB-5 Humbucker, Classic Stack Plus STK-S4 Middle and Vintage Hot Stack STK-S7 for the neck on my Highway-One Strat. It screams! It cries and it makes me cream. I'm loving it!

To get Zakk Wylde's sound you may want to look into Active Pickups like the Blackouts or maybe try the new Blackouts Modular Preamp. I'll be getting one of those next payday

I would go for JB/ Distortion for the bridge and Cool Rails for the neck.

    Luke
This a mostly a "sentimental" rebuild. It was my first guitar.
Was given to me by my father. A lot of good memories. Its a
knock off of a HSS strat. The body is plywood.
I plant to replace the 3 pick ups, bridge, tuners.
I play mostly Ozzy and Sabbath and 80's \ 90's metal.
I would need cleans for rock ballads and also stuff like Floyd
    and Eagles.
    Thanks for all your help!

If you're gonna push the gain from amp, Screamin' Demon + 2x Cool Rails would be pretty aggresive and have good clean too.

I must admit that the "rails" is not really the
look that I am going after. Any comparible
traditional looking singles to the rails?

    How about this set up?

    Bridge: Crunch Lab
    Middle: DP 419 (Area 67)
    Neck : DP 422 (Injector)

Will the singles match up well with the Crunch Lab?
