That's wrong. You can have two p'ups wound with the same type of wire to the same DCR, one being marvelous and the other being hideous.

Real life example: AP2H Slash neck against Epi Classic neck. The specs are very close, but sonically couldn't be more far apart. The Slash neck is a masterpiece of warmth, definition and articulation while being smooth, the Epi has no string separation clarity, it's congested, muddy and lifeless.

    Same specs, different outcome.

I think the last phrase just sums up nicely your case.

    HTH,
You are comparing an Epiphone pickup to a Seymour Duncan. I thought it was obvious that we are comparing quality pickups with similar design not vs Chinese junk pickups.

Thanks for sharing the wisdom of the most idiotic government the US ever had. It sums up the reasoning ability of a suit and a lollipop.

I didn't realize it was continuously increasing... sorry

it seems that you do not have the ability to tackle subjects without insulting the person that is making a conversation

but anyway please enlighten me if DC mag-type and wire thickness are the same what is it that makes so much of a difference?

    given that
    1) components are not junk
    2) a mojo-meter is not available

Here's my problem. I have a 2006 or 7 LP with '59s and both magnets swaped to UOA5. The bridge sounds amazing, the neck sounds too muddy and I can't seem to get much clearity. I like a cleaner pickup.

Do I go for a different magnet, replace the A5, or is this a pot issue? Should I dump it and go for a Seth or APH (which I love in my 335)? What's my next move?

maybe the winding pattern. How can a well wound unpotted pickup (seth lover) not squeal so much and another one (burstbucker) has so much of a feedback problem they begin potting them all? That's a usa made gibson pickup though.. hmm... doesn't have to do with pickup "stats" but that's something to consider I think...

WInd pattern and tension makes a huge difference. Listen to the Pearly Gates, Seth Lover and Alnico II Pro pickups. All A2 mags, all 42ga wire. They sure don't sound much the same to me.

Make sure that the neck vol pot is 500k, it would make much difference

but of the other 2 you can't love one and hate the other.

Of course you will prefer one

I have an UOA5 modded Ant set in my #2 guitar, a maple bodied with mahogany neck 335 copy.

The bridge p'up is excellent, and even though the neck p'up has a spongy quality in the bass I wish it didn't have, by no means is muddy and it has clarity and articulation in spades.

Before doing anything, try lowering the neck p'up to the following measures fretting the strings in the last fret, taking it from the base of the pickup between the polepieces to the base of the string. If it's covered, the screw under the 6th string must be set flush with the cover and the other following the neck's radius.

    6th string: 3.5 mm
    1st string: 1.5 mm

This should take care of the neck p'up muddyness. And changing the volume controls from those pesky 300K to 500K won't hurt either!

    Kojak -
I think I knw what's wrong now that I think about it. About a month after I got it, the tone pot died. Gibson replaced it under warrenty so I'll bet it's as "Quality" a job as when they built it. I think I'll replace all the pots.

so, 500K on the Vols, how much on the tones??
    Thx, - the yank

Well you said that you love the tone of your bridge so if that is a 300k vol leave it as it is. all the rest should be 500k vol & tone

in my LP I have them all 500lk and in my V the bridge has 300k vol

Why don't PU makers use UOA5's in bridge models and regular A5's in the neck??? That would keep a lot of players from having to adjust their tone pots.
    THIS!!

having tried almost every combination, this is the cat's ass for my taste
