Default How come pedals sound different on tape vs live?

    case in point.

I own a small clone chorus pedal.

I know the right settings for that song, though my pedal doesn't sound as intense.

any guesses why? I'm not talking about the tone, just the chorus effect itself.

it sounds very very present in the guitar sound, I know kurt only used pedals in front of the amp, i do the same and it's nowhere near as exagerated as it sounds here.

You just don't have access to all the mics they used, EQs and other gizmos that can be used to boost or cut stuff, compressors , and so on, not to mention the amps he used. You're hearing an idealized picture of Kurt using that gear in the recording, but a realtime full spectrum sound from your amp when you play it.

Kurt didn't use a Small Clone on Come as you are...He used a Polychorus. Also there's chorus on the bass too, so the effect is more pronounced.

I wouldn't doubt a patch from something like this is on the track too.

+1. The thing that you can hear on the recording is the output of a massive audio engineering processing and post-processing. Add Butch Vig to it and you can be sure that they threw into the mix anything under the sun to have certain sounds.

Onstage is a whole different world. It's everything about feel and confidence up there. Does your Small Stone feel thin for you? Change for something else that feels better.

    Bingo.

When you record, the sound you're used to hearing live gets squeezed into a tiny mic diaphragm, pumped through the channel strip on a mixing console (and whatever else the engineer decided to put on your channel), sifted through an AD converter, and coded as binary data (unless you record to actual tape, which colours the tone even more if anything). Expecting it to sound exactly the same after all that is lunacy.

Pretty much every time I've recorded anything I've had to completely change my amp settings from their normal live position. Some guys use entirely different rigs to record.

That explains why whenever I video tape myself and think I did an awesome job, the playback just sounds like I'm playing thru a transistor radio. Thank GOD its my recording and not me!

Seriously tho, what should one do to their sound to better facilitate recordings? Quiter? Less distortion? Compression? I've experiemented with mic placment, but that is very tedious..
