Yeah..I know Timmons , I think, uses old restored Echoplexes in the Studio, but chooses MemoryMans for convenience live? So the MemeoryMan has got to be a good tape like pedal.

Andy uses EP-3's and DMM's for different tones...

There is no analog delay pedal out there that really sounds like an Echoplex, it's just a different thing all together...I've even seen guys chain DMM's and EP boosters together...it just isn't the same...the bandwidth of an Echoplex is different...the roll off of the top end is different...tape compresses in a very natural way...

The bottom line is this, if you want the tone of an Echoplex w/o the Echoplex get a DL-4 and leave it set to EP models...it's still not as good but it's sure closer than any BBD analog aelay can muster...

Nice, I wonder how old you think I'm not...

You never show respect for me or anybody else for that matter but I don't blame you...I'm betting your mother didn't hold you enough or maybe your father held you too much but all that aside, Happy Holidays to you, your family and any friends you might have.

EJ goes back and fourth with Echoplex units every few years...using a DD-2 in place of an EP-3 doesn't mean they sound similar at all and FWIW, they don't but while we're at it...a DD-2 is much closer in ways than any BBD analog delay pedal...

PS: I have an old tube driven Maestro Echoplex (EP-2), a solid state Echoplex (EP-3) and also a Fender tape echo (Real Pain) and love the EP-2 best of all of them.

I'm sure you cannot truely replicate an echoplex in a pedal but I love the Strymon El Capistan, great compact unit for gigging with some great features.

How is "Have you ever tried an Echoplex?" a negative comment?

In answer to your question I used to own an EP-2 and a Fender Ecco Fonic I believe it was called and I currently own a very nice and clean EP-3.

    A couple of others:

H&K Replex - sounds good, but physically huge. I remember it was much better (in terms of tone suck) behind a buffer - its not true bypass.

Fulltone TTE - Essentially a EP-2 (The Tube Echoplex). Sounds mighty fine.

Been on the Strymon bandwagon for a few weeks. Way more convenient.

The H&K is a cool unit for what it does but I'll tall ya...for the size and pain in the neck that it is not to mention the cost I'd just as soon toss in a few more bucks and get a nice EP-3.

As for the TTE...nice, I give Fuller 2 thumbs up for effort but as nice as they are they miss the mark for me...still better than a pedal or simulator but he cleaned them up too much...they are a little too perfect.

My only real point in this is that the OP asked about some BBD chip based echo pedal that was comparable to an Echoplex and there just isn't one...

Wow this is very sad and bleak, we need to turn to modelers to get the classic tape tone, and the actual tape models like TTE are TOO CLEAN. I get what you mean by that, but there must be a way to scruff it up.

Has anybody tried building an echo-plex from scratch?
