It's kindaaa cool because the brostep stuff has a lot of crazy riff-ish things happening in the midrange and it's not so bass-droppy.. but even so, I'd say the entire genre of music only has about 1 song's worth of good ideas.

Skrillex, specifically is kind of bombastic dubstep - less subtlety and compositional depth and more BOOM! DAYYYUM!! KA-BOOM! MEOW!

It's made for teenagers. Sonny Moore (=Skrillex) fronted an emo / "post-hardcore" (read: emo) band before he made dubstep music.

That was teenager music, too.

That's just his musical style - what I call "low hanging fruit."

It doesn't necessarily mean that it's bad, just that it is, metaphorically, a candy bar as opposed to a pasta dinner. It's quick calories, not something that will stick with you. You and I have discussed this before (soso).

Anyways, I encourage you and everyone to think less about genres as a whole as represented by one popular artist, and if you're curious about any genre of music, say, dubstep in this case, to spend 30 seconds Googling before you click a YouTube link - in hopes that you will find a forum or a blog that is devoted to peeling back the mainstream layer and presenting more interesting material.

Here is an exercise: try listening to this clip and imagining ALL the synths are heavily distorted guitars. It would be a badass metal song. This is Dubba Jonny, and this song is a joke, making fun of how formulaic his own genre is. His joke song is better than most dubstep artists' hits - imagine what his real material is like.

Just like country music - it's like cheesecake - it's awesome sometimes, it fits what's going on sometimes. But listening to it a lot can be fatiguing.

As time passes, I've decided there are two types of music: stuff that I like, and stuff that I don't like. Genres be damned. I'll give everything a spin once, hey I might really dig it. If I don't like it, I just move on.

x2. If you asked me if I liked electronic music, I'd say "hell no," but that's the genre as a whole. deadmau5 has some songs (and a live show) that I like a lot.

I bought a Katy Perry album last year. I also bought a Cynic album, a Devils of Belgrade album, a Periphery album, a Marc Olberding album, a Polvo album, an Anthony Green album...

I'm like you.

Some stuff strikes me, some stuff doesn't. Doesn't much matter what it is.

Whenever I see a show announcement, I realize how far behind the times I am. All these people are freaking out that Skrillex or some other band I've never heard of are coming to town. I guess I don't really seek that stuff out, but I used to be at least a lot more aware of everything.

I don't care about genres either...

Yep ... Many moons ago there was something called Dubstep and I knew what that was, now I'm not so sure ... this new stuff just seems like a devolution of screamo and certain elements of electronic music. Not my thing ...

It's similar to "Hardcore" ... I used to know what hardcore was when it was stuff like Blag Flag, Bad Brains, DOA, Circle Jerks, Minor Threat etc etc etc ... then the meaning of hardcore changed in the mid 90's, and changed again in the 2000's.

I think it's Old Man syndrome setting in (in my case). Soon I'll be angry at kids, driving in an eratic manner and be in bed by 8:30.

Some electronic music artists have genuine talent.

Madeon is an example of this. That kid straight up has an ear for music. And rhythm. And timing.

He's a musician. And a good one.

He was born in 1994.

I think it's got more in common with the kind of So-Cal mallcore stuff from a few years ago.. Not derived from it, per se, because those kids didn't sell their schecters for synths and sequencers, but it satisfies that same visceral craving for quickly-digested instant gratification (like you mentioned earlier).

huge disclaimer: just because I stick up for various types of music does not necessarily mean that I like them. It also does not necessarily mean that I don't like them.

I can't give half a **** about 95% of music these days - dubstep included.

There's literally just too much music out there for me to sift through, and nearly all of it is crap. That's the big downside to lowering the barriers of entry for selling music: everyone can do it now, but that just means there's way more terrible music than in the past. A music fan has to do a lot more work to find the good stuff.

I've tried to listen to everything and find diamonds in the rough, but I can count on one hand the number of artists I've discovered in the past five years that I actually like enough to buy an album of. This goes for rock, pop, hip hop, electronic, and everything else really.

I guess I'm getting old. Oh well. Maybe I'll have to start caring about the stock market and wine tastings now.
