I know this is a bit of downer but oh well.
A friend of mine committed suicide. I don't know the details yet, but it's unfortunate. He was a really smart guy and I wish I could've known him better. I wasn't really close to him, but a lot of my other friends were.
It wasn't that surprising, in retrospect. He expressed himself very strongly in his aesthetic. That doesn't make it any less sad, of course. On the contrary, it's far more tragic that he wasn't able to find the kind of help he needed when he was openly vulnerable. I can only hope that he is at peace now. If you believe in prayers, it would be highly appreciated if you could extend some wishes and good vibes in general to his family and best friends. It's really hitting them hard right now.

That's very sad. I hate to hear that. I feel horrible for his family and friends. I've been in those shoes twice. You live the rest of your life wondering why they did it, and what, if anything, that you could have done to prevent it. It's a sad, yet very angry feeling, and it sucks!!

He was very into goth-like and black metal culture. Spikes, corpse paint, always wearing black, heavy boots, he was very into occult and religious imagery, but not in a stupid, "i'm so rebellious guys" way. He actually knew what it all symbolized. Now it seems like that was a sign. Before it happened, it just seemed like that was "his thing." Of course, we'll never know why he did what he did, but it's hard not to feel like it could've been prevented.

Lots of goths are perfectly not suicidal. Lots of regular looking people are suicidal. I wouldn't make any hindsight assumptions based on the way he dressed. You can't tell if someone is going to off themselves by looking at them.

Anyway, suicide sucks and I'm sorry you lost your friend. So often it's almost a taboo subject and I feel like if more people talked about it then maybe more people who are vulnerable might get the help they need.
