    Default Tele Build Preview

I've got all of the parts except for the bridge pickup but, I'm happy to see it coming together. Very light weight warmoth swamp ash body, mighty mite rosewood neck, guitar fetish pickguard and mini humbucker, Stacked tone pots, push/pull volume, 3 way switch, plate flipped just like the blacktop series, gotoh sperzel style locking tuners (staggered heights, might not need a string tree)...and a JB in the mail.

Two issues I have to deal with:
    - the neck cavity. I need to open it up slightly, one side of the mini hum is not sinking in far enough.
    - The pickguard is not resting against the bridge humbucker ring. I can't imagine carving or sanding away the area above the control plate, which is what I would have to do, so any suggestions for making it flush? Does it really even need to be flush with the bridge ring?

There's normally a gap between the pickguard and bridge plate. Looks very nice indeed!

Girlfriend won out on the rosewood I see

Looks like a great start. I think your pickguard "issue" is not unusual. As for the neck cavity chip away, or it could simply be the screw bottoming out

Good to know! One less thing to do. I'm going to install the tuners and and neck today and try to get that cavity figured out.

    Looks great so far.

I don't know about the bridge cavity though, it will work out somehow, I'm sure.

How is the fit and finish on the Mighty Mite neck?

I'm thinking about getting one for an "on the cheap" project

The finish is great, as in, barely there. Definitely not a shiny poly covered neck, it is oiled like they say in the description.

The frets are tiny and pretty sharp at the end. Fret work was expected though. Not sure how level they are, I figured I would just pay for a fret dress and setup anyway.

I just got the neck cavity where I wanted it, luckily I've got a forstner bit, that and a little bit of chiseling.

As for the bridge cavity, I'm a little worried, although previous owner had a duncan in it...I'll make it work one way or another.

What about installing the pickup? Do I have to remove the whole bleeping bridge just to put the pickup in there? Oy!

Here's another pic, showing that I got the tuners installed, neck cavity deepened, and the pickguard sanded to fit.

Try it. I don't think you'll have to remove the bridge.

It may require some sanding, if not how good are you at chiseling?

Anyone want to explain the point of the circular discs on the back of sperzel type tuners? I just tightened them up by hand, not sure if they serve a particular purpose.

You loosen the discs on the back, slide the string through and then tighten the disc. It locks the string in. Tune the string and you can clip the rest of the string. The idea is that you don't have to wind the string around the post. Feed the string through the hole until it is fairly snug (leave a little slack), tighten the disc and then tune. The rest of the string gets clipped off.

Woohoo! Sounds like my string changing time is getting cut by 90%

I have a MM (maple board) on the way, but I got one with with jumbo frets. I kept reading that the frets were on the small side.

Are the fret ends bad enough to fix or is it maybe dry winter weather shrinking the wood a bit?

Hard to say, I've never done fret work. Hell, almost everything I'm posting in this thread I've never done before.

Speaking of, here is the neck attached. I made sure the strings had good placement on the board before I drilled and screwed it in. The low e is not perfectly over the pickup screw, but close enough for a big oscillating string.

the low e to high e at the bridge is exactly 52mm, hopefully a trembucker was the right choice for the bridge.

I strapped it on with the snakeskin, this is an extremely light guitar! I hear that is a good sign of swamp ash quality. Ever so slightly neck heavy, but a leather strap and a bridge pickup will cure that. I'm hanging up this guitar for the night, it's happy hour in Chicago!
