Dimarzio Dog Eared soapbars?

Have any of you guys tried the Dimarzio soapbar?
The real p-90 type, not the DLX humbucker types.
I am looking for the old school clear yet raunchy tone of some of the 50s P-90s.
Sort of like the Thorogood tone with a amp just starting to break up.

If you listen to the Earl Slick sample on the Dimarzio site, that's pretty much what it sounds like.

They are most likely the best value for quality Dogears.

You still have to have a good amp though.

Gibson still makes the best production P90s for the money. Unless you want to get into Ants or the boutique builders, and even then it's debatable. Do yourself a favor and check out some Gibsons.

The Gibson replacements cost more than Lollars.
The Dimarzio clips are nice but too heavily produced.
What ever happened to pickup demos with just the guitar played through a Princeton or something?

I wouldn't waste money on a Lollar pickup...good pickups I guess but not worth what you have to pay IMHO.

Duncan P-90's are great, Novak makes some great P-90's and OC Duff winds a mean P-90 but for all that plain old Gibson P-90's are just fine...I just picked up one to put in my Melody Maker and they can be had cheap if you go used.

Does Duncan make a Non-antiquity dog eared P-90?
I don't see it on the list.
The Lollar P-90s are $100 each which is similar to Novak and OC Duff.
I guess I just need to search for used Gibson pups.

No, Duncans non CS P-90's are all soap bar mount but if you are inclined that can be changed with a base plate swap and a new cover.

Novak and Duff pickups and handwound by a person to your specs, whatever you want...Jasons stuff is all machine wound to set specs and the cost is the same or more than most handwound pickups.

Are Lollars good pickups? Sure.

Are they worth what Jasons charges for them? Not to me they are not.

All that said Gibson P-90's are still great pickups and really always have been...

Also remember you can change a soapbar into a dogear with a baseplate change and a new cover.

You can find Gibson P90s on eBay for cheap. Mostly because you get a bunch of guys swapping out their stock P90s to go with boutique ones. Here's my problem with boutique P90s... You get what the builder thinks is the ultimate P90 tone. You will hear words like "improved" a lot. I don't want my P90s improved... I want them to sound like a P90.

In my experience, the 50's P-90s varied quite a bit.
I have had 5 or 6 '50s gibsons, but the pups varied.
So you guys are telling me that the aftermarket Gibson P-90s sound like the "good" pups from the 50's?

Old pickups will vary a LOT because there were no real specs for them...winds changed, magnets changed, etc, etc

I won't stand here and tell you that a new P-90 bought on Ebay for $30 is as "good" as a mid 50's P-90 but I will tell you that new P-90's are great pickups and can be had for nothing...it's worth trying for sure, if you don't like it you've lost nothing.

I bought my last one with a dogear cover and 2 spacers for $40...it's worth that just to see!

Also something to keep in mind...Gibson only makes ONE P-90 right now...no matter what you hear anywhere else there is ONLY ONE...

If you buy a $300 faded SG with P-90's or a $4000 Historic Gold Top the pickups ARE THE SAME...there is no neck or bridge, they all read around 8k give or take thats a fact. the only thin g that changes form one to another is the baseplate and cover set up so it can be a soapbar or a dogear

My old ES-5 seemed to have all the same wind pups.
Dog eared spacers made everything work out fine.
