KC used mostly a Super Distortion/PAF loaded Jaguar on both "Nevermind" and "In Utero". He Switched to using JB's right before the In Utero tour started.

The Bridge Pickup on the Jag was changed to a JB at that time as well and the guitar was never again played on stage. Make what you will of that.

When you hear that guitar on the records, it is the Super Distortion roar.

Can a chrome covered JB still nail the Green Day tone?

Yep, during Nevermind and In Utero the Jag still had DiMarzios in it...

By the time they hit the road for the In Utero tour the Duper D had been swapped for a JB but by that time he was also using the Jag -Stang proto, modded Mustangs (with JB's) his old black Strat (with JB) was back in the fold and he pulled out the Univox Mosrite copies again so the Jag didn;t see much live action that tour.

Sure...as close as you can get outside of a studio recorded sound.

Wonder why Kurt stopped using it after the JB was installed? I own the replica jaguar and it NAILs that "Nevermind" sound. I did find this though:

"Cobain had Bailey do remarkably little to the guitar other than routine maintenance work. Bailey did profess to reluctantly replacing the red rubber Grolsch beer bottle washers with “proper strap locks,” and he might have replaced the nut and tuners. Cobain used the Jaguar for the early 1993 recording of third album In Utero, for which he had Bailey remove the tape covering the controls and “get all the switches wired back into play.” The only other significant mod Bailey performed was to swap out the bridge pickup with a JB for the 1993-1994 In Utero tour, although the guitar saw little use during that period."

The other guitars were lighter in weight and they did play an average of 20 plus songs per show...

The joke is he had 2 number ones.

he only had ONE jaguar, but had various mustangs...

but it's a toss up between these two in my mind:

    his lake placid blue mustang

    and the jag.

lake placid blue mustang had a hot rails in the bridge.

I owned a mustang with a hot rails in the bridge... it roared just like "Drain You" and other classics.

The lake placid blue mustang had the original stock Fender pickups.

No it had a black hotrails for sure. Is it reversed? Also why did he switch to JBs?

Definitely not a stock pickup in the bridge. Have a look here:

Pretty neat to see a high-resolution photo of it, makes it look real if you know what I mean.

Oh, and also, Butch Vig said "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was recorded with a Strat. Not sure if it's just the intro that a Strat was used on, or the whole song, but that might poke a hole in any humbucker discussion regarding the tone in that particular song.

I'm no expert, but from what I remember, the Nevermind album was recorded with various guitars (Strat, Jaguar, and maybe a Mustang).

Look at the bridge. The Tune-O-Matic was installed in 1992.

On the record with "Drain You" it was stock bridge and pickups.

I think he got the Super D idea from Sonic Youth ( as well as, I think J Mascis).
