loose wires on the coils

while checking out a pickup, it wasn't giving any reading on the multimeter. the tape on one edge looked like it had been disturbed, so I removed the tape and discovered the black wires had come apart. I connected them and the pickup tested strong and in the proper range. I was giving the pickup a final looking-over before putting the tape back on and saw this on the opposite end (see attached)

should that be a single wire connecting the coils? or is is supposed to be that way? if not, it's almost as if something was poking down the sides. if that needs a single wire, is it as simple as replacing it?

The wire in the picture is a grounding wire that is supposed to go from one coil to the other. you can unsolder the broken wire(s) and solder in a new one.

The wires in the photo have nothing to do with the coils. Note that the wire is soldered to the tape. The wire should then be soldered to the baseplate at the other end to ground the tape, which will have the effect of softening the treble a bit.

I -emailed SD cust serv at the same time I posted this. they got back to me today with the following:

That broken wire you see is what connects the copper shielding tape on both coils, so you do want to definitely connect that. Any bare wire will work and you’ll be up and running.
