Edges look shiney like alnico, but faces are dull gray/black, like ceramic. It is supposed to be an A5

Are the faces smoth or rough? If they are rough, it is probably a Rough Cast A5, or it could be a UOA5 (they are usually roughcast also).

no faces are smooth, dull dark grey - liek a fridge magnet. but sides are shiney like an alnico

Never had an A5 like that, but A8's consistantly have that look.

That was my thought as well. Smooth but dark grey faces with shiny edges = A8.
Dark grey faces and edges = ceramic.

Thanks all
All Alnicos can look like that if they're rough cast/unpolished.

Yeah, but he said they were smooth, not roughcast.

do you know where it originally came from? IME aftermarket magnets are usually marked, magnets taken from pickups usually aren't. so my guess would be its from a pickup and unlikely an A8 since very few pickups come with them stock. I've taken A5's from gibson pickups and they are like you've described.
our first drummer died in a bizzare gardening accident!
I won't dance in a club like this,
'Cause all the girls are sluts,
And the beer tastes just like piss.

I pulled it from a Screamin Demon. It is marked at the end with black sharpie ala Seymour (designates A5 IIRC)
