Default C/59 hybrid: i want a second opinion

Im getting the new C/59 hybrid for my Asian shredstick w a Charvel logo on the headstock... & probably gonna put a doublesized ceramic (a la Dunc Dist sh6) in it to get a turbo charged heavy rock sound: brown, but not ubermetal. (i like megamags cuz I use a 22w combo w a tube king distortion w a jj12ax7 swapped in)

I just want a second opinion.

Also, hybrid means its wired in series, is that correct?

    Thanks in advance!

Hybrid means that it is a pickup made from individual coils from two different pickups, in this case, one coil is from the Duncan Custom and the other is from a '59 model, and like all (most) humbuckers, it is wired in series.

I would be hesitant to put a big ceramic in it...but I'll let smarter people give you advice on that one

I've got a few hybrids in guitars now, and I really love the tones I'm getting from all of them. I've made the typical (or original) custom/59, a custom/Jazz (neck coil) and a 59 (b)/jazz(n). All are excellent, but they seem to like A5's for my money. The ceramic could be harsh, but by all means try it.

Just use it with the fully charged A5 first. And use it on a mid heavy amp tone. Then, all the frequencies are filled in. When you have a great guitar and amp tone, output isn't an issue.

And don't forget that one step up from that is an unoriented roughcast Custom 5, then a regular Custom 5, then a Custom, then a Custom 8. One of those will work for you probably better than a ceramic 59/C.

But if you try it, report back with your results.

My first thought is that it would sound like c*** with the ceramic, but you can't hurt anything by trying. I for one would be very interested to know what it actually sounds like. So...go for it and report back.

I think you've got it all wrong.

The infamous "Brown Sound" is the sound of an Alnico 2 magnet, a ceramic magnet goes in the opposite direction, tonewise.

    HTH,
The LT is right! the ceramic is on the first VH album and eddie does not consider that the "brown sound" he went to AII on the second record and his sound went BROWN.... !

I agree re: the brown sound A2 for Eddie, but i dont use a Marshall stack, i use a 22w combo.

I've replaced my double sized mag in my DD with an A5, & its very JB, then an A8, then a reg ceramic. Its true, ceramics are harsh, but it all still feels anemic compared to how the double sized sounds (which got lost in the transplants.) It growls but it doesnt push the same bottom.

Are these really gonna street for $89.95 (that's what the place on Ebay has them priced at)? Considering both a Custom and a 59' are $72.95, I had hoped/figured that's what the hybrid would cost. If it really is $89.95, the I'd probably rather buy a couple used pickups and build my own.

    That's the spirit.

It's probably priced higher because it might be listed as a shop floor custom thing.

Or because of MAP. Or gouging.

Roll your own. It's pretty simple and you can end up with two hybrids for the price of one '59 and one Custom5.

I really like how the A2 sounds in the hybrid. Not too dark which was my concern.

    It's staying as it is.

I haven't tried 'em out yet, but I just did a couple 498T/490T hybrids last night, which will be similar to a C/59. Metal machine wanted the 500T triple mag setup in his, which I am a little skeptical about, until I try it, but I wouldn't be afraid to try a single big ceramic at all.

I think there's some misconceptions about the big vs normal ceramics. If you can handle the heat I say give it a shot.

And yes, it will fit, just turn the spacer on it's side and don't crank down the screw coil too much.

I always assumed that with the Pearly Gates, it was an artist relations thing and Billy gets a cut. But that assumption may be wrong.

Wow, only $89 for.the Custom/59! I am getting one for sure now along with a 59 neck. That is cheap. I can't remember the last time I spent so little on a pickup coming from the boutique market, in which I don't think I will ever go back to. LOL. Not worth it!

I am hoping the new hybrid mates well with my alder and maple topped PRS with bolt on maple neck. Also hope it splits well!

Could be true, but likewise, I dont know enough about it. Could be why the Slash pickups are $90ish bucks, as well.
