    Default Gibson Les Pauls

I have a line on a couple. I'm looking for feedback on each because I'm mostly unfamilar with them.

The 3 I've been looking at are the Gothic (older one without active electronics), the BFG, and the 50's Tribute with p90s.

What are the pros and cons of each? Anything particular I should look out for?

I'd sayk since you're just looking to branch out a bit, go for the 50's. The BFG is too plain jane, imho, and unless you are branching out towards guyliner, I'd leave the Gothic alone. P90s are a blast, as well, especially if you aren't running over the top dirt.

i know that's a pretty heavy statement to make and a bunch of dudes that love Teles and shredsticks are gona argue with me, but they're wrong.
anything you can't do on a Les Paul is because you haven't practiced enough or you don't rock hard enough.

Are you sure you don't mean the 60's Tribute. This is the one with P-90s. And I think you'd be happier with the neck size if you're basically a Strat guy. The 50s neck is pretty thick.

I'd go with the 60's Tribute.

Um...One is 500t and flat black, one is P-90 Hum mix, and the other is double P-90's and classic finish, no frills.

Bit of range there. What's your purpose here? Why is this trip necessary?

Before there were 60s Tributes with P-90s, there were 50s Tributes with P-90s. The HB-equipped 50s Tributes didn't come until later, first as a dealer-exclusive and later in wide release.

Could be. The guitar was listed as 50's tribute with p90s

The purpose to get the opinion of people who have had experience with these guitar. I wasn't sure if any had a good or bad reputation. Pickup combos and finish were pretty easy to figure out. The range here is because as these were ones I got as trade offers.

Gothic - I'm not really sure. The cosmetics are not my favorite, though I would totally rock one (with some mods, such as nickel or gold hardware) if it was cheap. I'd also have to figure out a way to get rid of the inlay.

BFG - Probably the best stock pickup arrangement of any LP, IMHO, and the price is right. The cosmetics are probably too far off the wall for most people. But I plan to get one of the gator ones some time this year. I will make changes, though. Normal knobs, normal switch setup, pickup covers and rings, and nickel or gold hardware. Plus I think I will dye the board black.

'50's Tribute w/ P90's - Another one of my favorite LPs. I think they are too expensive new, though. Buy used and save $150 or $200, and you have a damned fine guitar for not much money. Be aware that they are now making many of their guitars with baked maple, obeche, or other woods for the fingerboards, so if you don't want that, make sure to verify that your guitar has a rosewood board.

My BFG is one the best playing and sounding LP's I've ever played. And the pickups are just beast and I like the raw finish on it.

I have a Gothic LP Studio. Mine is an earlier model. It initially had 300K pots in it so once I switched them to 500K it was like someone took a blanket off my amp. I am not completely sure what pickups are in it. Probably a 498R & 500T. Not my favorite pickups but they work. This Les Paul is hotter then my standard which has the Slash Sig Alnico II pickups in it. This guitar sounds exactly like one would expect a Les Paul to sound. I will eventually swap out the pickups or I may sell it.... not sure.

The 50's tribute is a really cool guitar. I like it a lot. I am especially fond of P90s ina Les Paul. Gibson P90's are great sounding pickups and probably will need nothing. The Gothic may at some point require a pickup change.
