    Default pickups for strat?

    hey everyone!!

im looking on getting a strat for christmas, probably a fender mexican standard strat. i'll lock down the trem and be getting different tuners in the future too, but that's not the point.
what i want is a vintage tone. i'll be using it for my blues, funk, country, etc... stuff.
my first thought was to go straight for the antiquities. probably a antiquity custom for bridge and texas hots for middle and neck. i want a great clean tone(which is why im picking single coils rather than humbuckers) and a smooth lead tone.

is this what im looking for?
if there's something else you'd recommend, please say so

I'm not sure Fender used alnico 2 magnets in vintage 50's and 60's Strats...and the the Texas Hots use alnico 2 magnets. They are great pickups! But I think the alnico 5 SSL-1 or Antiquity Surfers actually sound more like the pickups in my original '63 Strat.

That said, my favorite set of Duncan Strat pickups is the Antiquity Surfer neck and middle and an Antiquity Texas Hot Custom Bridge pickup...or a full set of Surfers.

The Surfer Custom bridge would be similar in output but brighter and glassier than the Texas Hot Custom bridge. The Texas Hot bridge would have more mids and softer less glassy treble....and, IMO, a more touch responsive feel when you dig in and shape the tone with your pick.

The only catch in using the Texas Hot Custom bridge and Surfer neck and middle is that the Texas Hot Custom bridge is out of phase with the Surfers unless you reverse the black and white wires of the Texas Hot Custom bridge pickup...then it'll work perfectly. Lew

    a bit off topic but...

The pickups are fighting each other. Like one pickup isnt sending the signal as fast as the other and it has a really weird sound, like if you take and cut a song in half, then overlay it just a little off and play it, if you get what im saying.

Go all Texas Hots & custom bridge, Lew hasn't the faintest as to what he's talking about.

I like both sets alot! But I like combining the two sets with the Surfer neck and middle and Texas Hot bridge the best. Lew

Yeah, those Surfers & a set of Tele Ants are next on my list, Luigi. I let you know when it's time.

i know that i really like those lindy fralin vintage hot single coils, but kinda doubt i can afford them. so how different is the sound between the vintage hots and the texas hots and custom bridge?
