i have not experienced the cocked wah sound with the JB8. the highs are too suppressed into the spectrum. its a very intense flat and fat sound i would describe. but my guitar is basswood body and rosewood fret so those wood seem to suppress openness imo.
u will find u need less amp eq boosting to get it were you like it, instead of 6-7-6 it sound just as good at 4-5-5 for example.

Ok sweet. And basswood really accentuates mids, so if you didn't hear that,
then I assume it wouldn't be a problem in a Les Paul Custom.

I had been highly considering the SH-6 for my next bridge pup, but the
"harsh high end" scares me, with the LPC having a ebony board.

With the JB8 being so similar, and with the characteristics of an alnico magnet,
it seems like it may be the ticket.

That's the only thing I don't like my (sort of) JB8; it's not much of an open sound.
I miss that from when I had the Demon there but it sounds so good at the neck with a UOA5 magnet that it's not going anywhere.

So I need another Demon now.
Ibanez SZ320 / A2 Pro neck, Screamin' Demon bridge.
AllParts Strat / Toneriders Pure Vintage set
    Partscaster #2 / JB-8 bridge.

    Egnater Tweaker 15 + DIY 1x12 cab + Eminence Wizard / Roland Cube 60
Zvex Super Duper, EHX Memory Toy, Keeley BD2, Boss GE-7, CE-2, DD-5, Marshall Jackhammer,
    EHX Metal Muff TB.

I love the distortion pickup, but only in warmer woods. I love it in mohagany with rosewood boards. Ive tried it in several guitars with maple tops and ebony boards and it is just too harsh and sterile. Dont let the pickup scare you. But I would stay away from it with that ebony

Would it make a difference if it's gold covered and in D standard?

you may like it. I did not like it with an ebony board. that pickup sizzles..in a good way but you have to be careful with it. I think its perfect in mohogany and rosewood

u may be right, i dont have the money to get alder jacksons to see what you mean. so i may never know what im missing. i do though have great examples of the differences in pickups ive purchased and all them have sounded a little different in this guitar. so in my experience i have the info needed for formulate a tonal opinion about each one.
