Default Music that showcases Les Paul/ PAFs

I organize my cd Collection by pickup model. (...what? That's not weird.) honestly i do. And Im trying to build up my collection of cds that highlight the sound of Les Pauls with PAFs.

Heres what I have so far

    Thin Lizzy- Jailbreak,etc
    Zzep-Song Remains the Same
The Cars-1st lp. (Elliot Easton sez he used his on most tracks)
April Wine-Louder, Faster (I believe theyre stock anyways.)
ZZtop- Gr Hits & the new live Germany 1980.
    Skynyrd.-lots of,...

What else? What artist & which cd? What Joe Walsh album is the gtr player fave? Whabout Allmans Bros? (i tend to prefer studio sound quality, but live can be good)

    Domo Arigato!

YES!! That doesnt turn up in my store often but thats exactly what I want!! Is any one of those the most attractive to start with if i go online? Best guitar mix? Guitar performance? Most guitary songs? Least keyboard-y?

I checked the Wsnake vinyl section the other day & someone bought the live album ($5!) from under me. Snooze=loose. I dont play vinyl but the cover painting is classic, hope i see that again...

Man, thanks for reminding me! Im gonna watch my Wsnake doc right now!

Putting Gary Moore into youtube also raises quite a bit of LP/PAF material, namely some Thin Lizzy shows

I should have specified Gibson stock PAF. But Appetite is in that collection: the neck pickup in Sweet Child of Mine blows me away at how Gibson LesPaul his counterfeit Les sounds- which says something about the Les Paul design, as well as the luthier who built (R.I.P.)

    It wasn't a counterfeit, it was a replica...big difference.

And although it wasn't technically a Gibson, it did have "stock" Gibson PAFs.

Outta leftfield, anything with Robert Fripp on it. (Black LP Custom, usually through Big Muff.) Very much a classic Les Paul tone. Definitive example, his lead line on "Heroes" by David Bowie. No Sustainiac, just outright volume and room sweet spots.

Didn't Mark Knopfler play old Les Pauls with PAFs for the longest time? "Money for Nothing" is the ultimate neck PAF sound, to me. (Though it was probably a P-90 in a Telecaster or something equally confounding.)

Ummm .... anything by LES PAUL before the advent of the LP Recording model. I'd suggest the recordings with Mary Ford.

S'funny how nobody ever thinks of Les when they talk about LP guitars.

It's not always PAFs with Lizzy! Bear in mind that for the Nightlife, Fighting and Jailbreak albums most of the guitar tracks were recorded with Gorham and Robertson's LP Deluxes with mini-hums. (Gary Moore's solo on the Nightlife version of Still In Love With You would be PAF though - I think). Robbo's Deluxe was modded with PAFs around the time of the Johnny The Fox album, around the same time he switched to the black Custom for live work. Gorham used the mini-hum Deluxe at least until the Bad Reputation album. Around the time of Black Rose he acquired an old PAF-loaded 'burst but was also playing Strat-style axes with 'buckers by then. Gary Moore did use a LP with PAFs but other guitars too (P90 LP junior on the Sydney live DVD if I recall correctly). Snowy White's old goldtop had PAFs (Chinatown & Renegade albums). Phew...

First classic Les Paul / PAF tones that spring to my mind....

Eric Clapton on John Mayall's Bluesbreakers beano album.
Paul Kossoff with Free (especially Tons Of Sobs, Free, Free Live, Fire & Water, Live at The BBC)
Peter Green & Danny Kirwan with Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. Live In Boston / Boston Blues!
Jimmy Page - Led Zep II onwards. The Song Remains The Same and How The West Was Won are great examples.
    Gary Rossington with Skynyrd...

Naming himself after a guitar wasn't his smartest move. No one remembers Telly Caster either, despite his exemplary country blues chops.

Les Paul Kossoff. Some of the most beautiful clean sounds as well as the more obvious cranked Marshall rockin'. Koss is the man !

I don't think you can have such a list without including John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton. Clapton and Mike Bloomfield put the LP back on the map.
Gibson LP Melody Maker -- stock, Epiphone Dot -- Jazz neck and '59 bridge, Fender Telecaster Blackout Deluxe -- stock, 90's MIM Standard Strat with Duncan Texas Hot Custom in the bridge.

I always think of early-mid era Def Leppard, with Steve Clark and his Black Beauty, when I think of Les Pauls and PAFs. "Armageddon It" maybe?

And, of course, Jethro Tull. Martin Barre used a Les Paul in the early days before he started using Hamers. The "Aqualung" solo was recorded on a Les Paul (although it was a Jr., so maybe it had a P-90, can't recall).
