    Default New Guitar Day. Gibson Thunderhorse Explorer

    I went to buy strings and would up with one of the Gibson Thunderhorse Explorer.
    The guitar was on hold for 9 months at the dealer, the buyer bailed so I jumped at
    the opportunity. Mine is is one of the first ones so it has an actual ebony board
    rather than richlite which is what they now come with.

    It has Burstbucker 1 & 2 pickups...which work well in this instrument.

    It looks amazing, plays incredibly well.

    The only sad thing about this is the Fireman...it had to be sacrificed to justify this purchase.

    Cool. Congratulations.

    I cannot tell from the pic, but do they have the full-sized body or the scaled-down body?

    How do you like the "Richlite" fingerboard?

    This is one of the early ones, the board is Ebony not richlite.

    It isn't scaled down...the guitar weighs about 9 pounds

    They're full size. Awesome guitar, I wish I was a righty. I'm a fan of Dethklok/Metalacolypse, Brendon Small is an kick ass player.

    Cool. I'd like to get one of the ones with an ebony board and paint the top black. A black full-sized Explorer with binding on the neck and body is one of my most wanted guitars. It has proven pretty hard to find an old Hamer Standard with that color scheme, so the Thunderhorse is sounding like it might be a good option.

    If you look again, you'll see that my comment was about finding an early Hamer Standard in black, not in silverburst.

    OOPS!! I'm missed that part. Black you can find. The Korean made Black ones with Cream binding are nice too even for imports.

    Yeah, I tossed around the idea of one of those. I'd really like an early model if I am gonna go ahead and go for a Hamer. I have played a few and they are unbelievably sweet. Those and early Deans too. My bandmate has a Caddy that I love. Not the body style for me, though.

    As far as black early-model Standards go, I think I've only really seen the one played by Lita Ford. Almost all of them seem to be bursts.

    Used to have...wish I had it back...

    Love me some. That Thunderhorse is badass, btw. EMG 85/60 in chrome is a hell of an idea...

    anything you can't do on a Les Paul is because you haven't practiced enough or you don't rock hard enough.

    With a name like Thunderhorse and a pedigree coming from Metalocalypse, it needs more EMG'z!!!

    That won't happen. While I am not an EMG hater they aren't my thing.

    I kinda like the stock burstbuckers.

    Yeah, don't spoil that beauty. Nothing looks better than a stock nickel cover. As long as you like Silverburst, not a single change is needed IMO (except maybe undoing the top-wrapped tailpiece the next time you change strings).

    I don't know, I like the fact that it is a custom guitar that DOESN'T have EMG's. Don't get me wrong, I like EMG, I've had 81's and now I have HZ-H4's, but everyone and thier goldfish uses them. It kinda takes the uniqueness out of it and (except for guitar/amp settings) makes everyone sound the same.

    Niiice. Normally I don't care for silverburst but on an Explorer, it's the shizz.

    It'd be even better if there were no dots on the front of the neck.
    For him who struck thy foreign string,
    I ween this heart hath ceased to care;
    Then why dost thou such feelings bring
    To my sad spirit - old Guitar?

    Even so, Guitar, thy magic tone
    Hath moved the tear and waked the sigh;
    Hath bid the ancient torrent moan
    Although its very source is dry.
