Triple-Bucker? (Three coils...)

Let's suppose you have a three-coil-spot in a guitar. What would you do?

Three equal coils in series? Three progressively louder coils? sort of like single, 59, to Hybrid 59/Custom????

Blade plus a single...like maybe a Dimebucker plus a single coil to switch it down a notch with an a2p coil or such?

Strat style, all in one spot? With super 7 switching? Single, bucker, and quack all from one locaiton?

What would you do? How would you wire it?

I had to dig into my way-back machine. The Trifecta:

I'd divide the pickup into two sections other. Section A would include the front coil (coil 1). Section B would include the middle coil (coil 2) and the rear coil (coil 3) in series with each other.

One two-way switch would allow you to run sections A and B either in series or in parallel.

One "master" three-way switch would allow you to choose between A alone, A+B, or B alone.

Another three-way switch would allow you to orient the coils in section B in different ways. With this switch, you choose coil 2 alone, 2+3 in series, or coil 3 alone.

So, with the master switch in the front position, all you'd get would be coil one, the front pickup. With the master switch in the back position, all you'd get would be whatever orientation you have set for coils 2 and 3, using the other three-way switch. Put the master switch in the middle, and you get sections A and B in parallel with each other. Flip the master series/parallel switch, and you get sections A and B in series.

So you get the following combinations:

1. coil 1 alone
2. coil 1 in parallel with coil 2
3. coil 1 in parallel with coil 3
4. coil 1 in parallel with coils 2+3 (in series with each other)
5. coil 2 alone
6. coil 3 alone
7. coils 2+3 only (in series with each other)
8. coil 1 in series with coil 2
9. coil 1 in series with coil 3
10. coil 1 in series with coils 2+3 (in series with each other)

Controls would be V/T/T. Master volume, tone for section A, and tone for section B.
All three coils would be individually adjustable Strat-style pickups.

What kind of magnet setup do you have there with the three coils?

The Ibanez ATK basses have that, and what they do is a 3 way switch with:

1) Two coils in series
2) Two coils in Parallel
3) Single coil with a dummy coil.

Those basses sound kick ass btw.

Hamer used to do that, and it was just a humbucker next to a single. There used to be pickup called the motherbucker that was 3 coils all the same pickup. Not sure how they got it hum cancelling since you'd think the 3rd would throw it off, I guess it was a balancing act in the design.

I would want three matched coils and the middle coil would need to have its phase reversed on the switch. Otherwise you could have a stacked single coil in the middle to complete the humbucking circuit for the two outer coils. Or a mini humbucker in the middle to complete the circuit for the outer coils, something like six rails.

I dont know about all the fancy options, but one Invader coil with the big slugs, one X2N coil with the big rail and one Custom coil. All with the Invader's mag setup.

That would probably be pretty METAL!
