Thanks guys, lots of info here..!
Since matte bobbins suit my guitar really well, it's nice to have more option other than just dimarzio (some of their models sound great btw).

I remember originally thinking Duncan pickups WERE matte finished as I recalled the first time I played a Kramer Baretta in '84 or '85 and it had the nice matte finish (even nicer IMO than Dimarzio's matte finish) and I always assumed it was a Duncan JB as that was what they were advertised as having back then in magazines. I guess the earlier ones had Schaller pickups and so there is another option with Schaller pickups. Too bad they never became reknowned for their pickups as they did with their Floyd Rose, bridges and tuners.

This picture shows the texture which is nice and I have never seen another pickup that uses a similar textured plastic like this. I wish Duncan and Dimarzio had this finish as I find it superior in looks and wear to either of them.

Oh, don't be so sure 'bout that, mate.

The Schaller Golden 50s still are the choice of a myriad of small hi-end east european luthiers as OEM p'ups.

maybe in Europe, but I almost never see them in OEM guitars in the US nowadays.

    Not nowadays, no.

They used to be OEM for Heritage, though.

    Anyway, I like Duncans better.

I've done it several times using 600 grit, works great, matches them up with a Dimarzio pretty well. You gotta be careful on the slug coil though, best if you push them out a little if you want to keep the swirly marks.
the mag would be taken out first
