    Default What would cause this???

PAF style pickup, reads 7.2k...sounds VERY thin and bright.

Based on info from another thread I do not think the coils are wired in parallel and since it's reading 7.2 and there is no extra noise I don't think it's running on one coil.

    Any other ideas???

A buddy of mine had an LP with that same problem on the bridge. His turned out to be a bad volume pot or bad tone pot (can't remember which). So I'd check those. Hope that helps!

Brand new doesn't mean defect free.

My point was that it may be brand new but still a bad pot. It happens. As a PC tech for the last 15 years you have no idea how many brand new parts I've seen that needed to be replaced.

The reason this is such a point to me is that it's easier to replace a pot without breaking something than to take a pickup apart. I always start with the simple problems before jumping to the more complicated stuff.

Yep, dc res. is too high for parallel. Could it be series, out-of-phase w/itself?

could be out of phase with itself or the magnet could be really weak.

is it possible that it isnt made with #42 wire?

Magnet should be fine...it w2as fine not too long ago and the other pickup in the same guitar is still fine...

The out of phase thing is where my head is at right now.

Out of phase with itself, probably just wired wrong. What is it? Gibson has a different color code from SD, has a different color code from DMZ, has a different color code from BK, etc.

Out of phase with itself would make it noisier and quieter than split.

More likely than that is it being wound with the wrong wire. Thicker wire will get you less winds, brighter response and lower output, generally.

Or an electronics issue. A partial short is another "fun" one.

Or in a bridge pickup, the pickup route being too close to the bridge.

7.2K pickup in bridge is another recipe for brightness...

the trouble with that is that you cant get very much wire on there so getting to 7k with #40 would be a big coil

    Is the output cable
    1) single conductor + braided shield
    2) four con + drain wire and foil shield
    3) some other format.

What they said above, out of phase with itself. Reverse the wires on one of the coils, but not both.

Having had a couple bad pots in my time (although I agree it's RARE) it still happened enough to never discount it as a valid reason. LOL

Of course before that I would make sure everything is soldered correctly. Start small and free and work your way up.

Let's not make this more difficult than it is, this pickup is probably just wired out of phase.
