Default anyone else mag swap, then go back to stock and think Seymour was right ?

so done a few mag swaps and enjoyed them. Gotta say I usually end up putting the stock mag back in out of curosity and finding I like it more overall after all

did this with the 59n last night . had an a4 in it for ages ,and liked it for ages. was restringing so figured while the srtings were off I'd put the a5 back in just to remember what it was like and BAM! loved it off the bat again

also had the same thing with some C5 mag swaps . seems like honeymoon period with the new mag is great ,and it does some thigns great, but the stock mags have a much wider variety and personality

I've swapped, liked it, got tired of it, swapped back to stock, liked it, got bored with it, swapped back again, decided I really like it and I'm keeping it.

tried an A8 in a JB/C hybrid. sounded so much like a JB8 and a C8 (go figure), that I took it out.

also thinking of taking an A8 out of a JB. nothing to do with the JB8... just too many A8 pups in action right now (Blazebuckers, C8, Alternative 8).

to be fair I did really like the 59nA4 when I had the Alt 8 in the guitar but not so much with the Apig . the neck A5 seems to work better with the A5 in the pig

The only one I've tried thus far is an A8 in a Custom in my maple/ash Charvel mutt, and while I might try a UOA5 I got for giggles, NO WAY would I go back to the stock ceramic - in that guitar, the C8 destroys it. Doesn't mean Seymour was wrong by any stretch, just means the stock choice could be improved upon, again in that particular guitar...

Having said that, I imagine a ceramic Custom would sound cool in a Les Paul, y'know?

I think tastes and tone preferences change over time too. The Alnico 8 is a relatively new magnet to the pickup world, and I think it fills a niche that may not have been around since Seymour started winding pickups.

My first mag swap is up next, right after changing strings on the 12 string!

I'll let you know. But now that I have had time to live with the JB in this guitar, i think I'll be sticking with the A8, pretty sure.

This guitar is just no loving the JB. I do have one coming up that will however...

No, I take it out for a reason. Once I take out a mag, I find something else that I like better; that may take a few attempts though, but I get it dialed in. If there was anyway to make the stock mag work (set up, pots, resistors, etc), I've already tried it before I start swapping.

I don't do mag swaps on a whim. If a stock pup isn't right for me and I've tried everything I can to make it work, I start going through different mags until I find the perfect match. Once I've found what works and I'm happy with it, I have no desire to change it back to what wasn't working in the first place.

True, our tastes change over time, but I have yet to go back to the stock mag in any of the pups that I've swapped mags in.

To the OP, I'd say, not exactly. However, I have tried all the Custom series pickups and my favorite is the original Custom, so in that sense, I'd say Seymour definitely got it right on the first try.

Most Duncan p'ups can graciously take any Alnico magnet known to mankind.

Every stock p'up is "right". I just make'em "righter for me", if that makes any sense to any of you, forumites.

My customers also LOVE their modded (by me) Duncan p'ups. Specially their PAFs with UOA5s and their Customs with A8s.

Lately, I've been asked for UOA5s for Seths AND Ants... looks like a trend, at least in my neck of woods.
