    Default OD Pedal Suggestions Needed

Hey guys, I need some suggestions on an overdrive pedal. I need something to replace my SD-1 that I've had forever. I hate the mid-honk that it has, no matter how I dial it in. I'm also not a fan of TS types either, since they tend to do the same thing. What I'd like is a smooth OD that doesn't have a ton of gain. More warmth is what I'm after. Ideally it will be used on the clean channel of my Orange TH30, and with a Strat to get a simple, fluid bluesy tone.

Last criteria.... has to be $150 new or less. I'm still unemployed at the moment so I can't go bananas. Thanks in advance!

Get a Way Huge Green Rhino. It doesn't have a high mid spike, but big lows, thick low mids, and clear highs. It's got amazing sustain too, which is nice with a strat.

It's warmer and fatter than most OD's too, since it's got the magical 100Hz knob. It's like a girth control, so it won't be skinny sounding.

They're $130 new, which is surprising because they probably would have sold just as well at $160.

Love my fulltone OCD. I find it to be really transparent; doesn't color your tone at all. It also responds really well to picking dynamics. It's about $130 new.

First, and with apologies because it's over your budget: I replaced an SD-1 with a Zendrive and I'm quite happy with that. But if I was doing it over, I'd consider a CMATMODS Butah pedal. Just judging from YouTube vids and such, of course, but from the listening I've done, I'd like to have one. Being a lower gain drive, it might fit your description.

check out dmb pedals I just got them to build me a custom shop dual overdrive containing their stellar drive into their lexi drive.

All their dirts are fantastic and a little different than the usual suspects.

The Lexi is kinda that classic british amp sound (the bite lets you go from warm to a bright biting tone, the gain range takes you from a cleanish plexi tone to full on stack roar)

The Stellar drive is very amp like and like the Lexi has a huge tone range taking you from dark sounds to cutting tones. But it has a very fuzz like quality to it.

The Americana is very cool it's like a Fender amp in overdrive style (depending on how you set it you can get some cool old school tweed tones or some overdriven blackface tones).

I prefer their 4 knob drive pedals because the clean knob is just icing on an already sweet cake and makes them even more versatile.

JHS Morning Glory would be awesome for what you want, but it is a little more than your are wanting to spend at $199.

Check out the Xotic line of Boosters. Either the RC, AC, or BB will fit your needs. Plus, I just sold a BB for $120, so they can definitely be had in your price range.

I'm going to second this suggestion, and add one for the Custom Badass Overdrive from MXR, which is really similar. I don't find either of them to have that low-end drop out that a TS gets, and they can both get really warm.

The Helium Boost is in the transparent overdrive school. It can be used strictly as a clean boost, or a very nice range of flavor from super light OD to Tweedish territory.

The Way Huge Green Rhino is the best Tubescreamer pedal out there imho! The versatility is off the charts. If you like Tubescreamers, you'll love this one! If you don't like Tubescreamers, you'll love this one anyways!

I'd like to suggest either of these 2:

    1. MXR custom badass modified OD
    2. Boss Blues Driver

Both are well inside your budget.

Take you and your guitar to the store and try a bunch of them out. Pick out the best one that works for you. You may not like the TS varieties but the one you pick just may be a clone of one.

After playing with tons of overdrives over the years, I like the current MXR Classic Overdrive from GC. It's a great sounding OD.

There are times where I prefer a clean boost instead to give me *more* or a boost with a little grit. DIY projects for those are fun.

Yep. Rhino is probably a good one to check out too, but you can probably find an OD-3 for cheap. Does exactly what you asked for.

Some good suggestions here guys. Looks like I'm leaning towards the Green Rhino and the MXR Custom Badass. I'll weigh in when I decide on one and get it!

Definitely check out the Green Rhino.

Another one that would be worth checking out is the TC Electronic Dark Matter. It's a Marshall-flavoured distortion rather than an overdrive, but into the clean channel of an amp, it will do pretty much exactly what you've described.
