    Default NGD...forum trade :)

you've all seen her before. courtesy of muttznmongrelz, i've acquired my first gibson...'01 LP studio plus. after playing a strat for a couple months, it's a different sound for sure. i like it. not too crazy about the stock pups (kind of muddy), but we'll see what we can do about that. pretty sure dystrust has a few duncans laying around without homes that he'd be glad to loan to me, for a special favor or two. (that's a joke, btw. ) feels good in my hands, not too heavy. i'm liking the shorter scale too.

i think she's extra pretty too, dings and all. red's a good color for me. although, if i wind up keeping her long-term, i'll probably swap out the gold hardware for nickel. she's actually been here since tuesday afternoon, and i took pix right away but wasn't entirely satisfied with them because the backdrop (my patio furniture) is also red, but whatev. haven't gotten around to taking more, so they'll have to do for now.

and dystrust snapped this one tonight...just because we know how much you all appreciate irony.

SOON, WE WILL ALL HAS A FLAVR!!1!

Nice! I don't care if it's purist-approved or not: TP-6 tailpieces are just COOL. I don't know what pups are in there but if it hasn't been done already, a set of 500k pots ought to wake it right up.

anything you can't do on a Les Paul is because you haven't practiced enough or you don't rock hard enough.

Nice Studio and Congratulations. I've been using the stock Burstbucker Pro and 490R in my Studio Deluxe and haven't wanted to change them yet. They actually sound really good and are not muddy. However, my studio is not chambered. Burstbucker Pros and Seth Lovers have a lot of clarity so you might want to check those pickups out if you upgrade.

That worn goldl TP-6 tailpiece looks amazing with the figured top... Keep it!

I agree on the 500k pots... try new pots before new pups... If the new pots don't open up the pups, then a 59/custom hybrid would likely sound amazing in that.

This. If it still has the original 300k Gibson pots, it really doesn't matter what you stick in it, they are going to sound "off". I've never really been sure why Gibson bothered to use those 300k's.

Along with that, OP, you could switch the mags between the 498 and the 490. That'd give you A2 fat in the bridge and A5 clarity in the neck, though doing it with the covers certainly adds a few steps on the "pain in the ass" scale.

seriously though, i've generally enjoyed being "one of the guys" a lot more than having a group of girlfriends. i have my best friend who is a woman and generally, other than her, i prefer hanging out with dudes, or at least a mixed crowd. guys tend to be more straightforward and less uptight in my experience...more fun all around. women can be MEAN.

sorry man, better luck next time. shouldn't happen again, as i can't imagine i'll be buying new axes that often. does it give you a little comfort that she's gone to a good home where she's much appreciated, as the only gibson child?

i might try that. i'm new to the electronics in general, but i'm a tinkerer by nature, so they don't intimidate me. dystrust tells me he's never tried swapping magnets out before but it's worth a try for sure. then, if i'm still not crazy about them, i can swap them out entirely.

the TP6...it's staying put for now. there's an extra gold stock tailpiece laying around here that i might try out at some point when i change the strings on it, just to see the difference, but not until after all the other nuances have been addressed, and the TP6 might just go right back on anyway during the next string change. it's not like it's a huge pain in the ass to swap out, and i want to try different things to see what i like best instead of just saying "well it sounds good to me" without knowing what else is possible, especially with a switch that easy. i just want to keep an open mind and try it. from the consensus here though, it sounds like the TP6 is something i'm going to want to keep on there.

Glad it made it safely and that you're enjoying it. I thought it was a beauty as well, even w/the "character marks" and it did play very nicely. Thanks again!

Like I said before, that's an extremely nice looking studio. I'd keep the gold hardware, it has such a great "relic"/worn-in look to it.

If clarity is what you want, you gotta try the C/59 hybrid...sparkling tone.
