Default Looking for a good entry bass ... for my daughter

My nine-year-old daughter was tossing up whether to play Sax or the Bass. Next year she can join the school band and they don't allow 6-stringers (!!!) so she was thinking of starting the sax this summer or the bass. Being the thoughtful dad I am, I steered her towards the bass.

so, we start lessons in two weeks (side note, my seven-year-old is playing the drums) so I need to look at a bass for a young girl. Any ideas? she tried one in this rinky-dink "lesson" store and it was HUGE next to her!! I know basses are big, so I thought I'd ask around for any ideas on a "girly" bass. She wants a pink one. Anyhow, looking to spend around $250-$300.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

This sounds like a job for Daisy Rock.

I'm always torn about kids playing anything at that age. On the one hand, it's awesome. On the other, I think "too young"

One key factor for ANY instrument (part of my too young argument) is that it really needs to fit the hand. A bass (or a Sax) at 9 aint it unless she is a WNBA player in the making. Main reason for violin - it fits! Followed by keys, followed by guitar.

Still - band - the death of musical desire...

    Daisy Rebel

Check Rondo out maybe? They usually have a lot of decent starter instruments for a good price.

Oh, I LIKE that!! I was thinking of a short scale to keep it managable for her. She is tall, but not WNBA tall.

If you really want to keep it cheap, the Squier Bronco Bass is a steal.

+1 for the Squier Bronco or Badtz Maru models.

A really cool dad might want to invest in a pre-owned, American-made Fender Musicmaster or Mustang Bass for his daughter. Future proof!

Great for the player that requires a smaller, more comfortable bass
Padded carry bag and instructional DVD in English and Spanish included.
This bass has a 30" scale length; that's 4 inches shorter than a normal size bass, making it an excellent starter bass for a young beginner
It also makes a perfect low cost travel bass
This bass guitar features a solid alder body (not plywood) and a beautiful maple neck with rosewood fingerboard and 20 frets which helps deliver excellent tone and sustain
The design of the neck and adjustable bridge provide excellent action, making the bass very easy to play
Other features include trus-rod adjustable neck, passive pickups, fully adjustable bridge and non-locking tuners
The bass has a single ply white pick-guard and D’addario strings are installed at the factory.

"Kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves." Numbers 31:17-18

Split the difference: tuba. It's a horn that will get her into band (and one that is always in need), plus it will teach her how to read for bass.

Kind of serious, kind of joking...

But for the pink bass, I'd get a Squier Bronco and a can of Krylon...or see if she likes the red Bronco. I have a black Bronco and it is a really great bass for $150. (I got mine for $100 used locally.) No mods desperately required, just plug and play. Some day if I start using it more live, I may but better tuners on it, but the pickup sounds great, it looks great, and the neck is very well made. IMO it is worth nearly twice as much as what they cost, when comparing it to other Squier models. They ought to be $289 basses IMO.

yup - the SX at rondo is a great choice - and wont set you back a lot of cheese .. if she bails, you wont feel terrible about sunk cost

i got my wife one when she wanted to learn (she is a tiny person with tiny hands - so the shorta scale option was required)

There's a daisy rock for about 150 but it doesn't come in pink it's a very light blue burst. so that might be for her. Eventually you can buy a Dean bass that is pink with a pink board, but that's for later probably.
