    Default Strap Hole Stripped

On my Epi LP and the screw just comes out. The one on the horn. I guess I need some wood filler or something? What do you guys recommend to fix it?

Came here to post what Stratman just did. The toothpick trick works every time.

Not a rare problem. Toothpicks and wood glue will tighten a strap hole; dip them in glue, cram them in, break off the part sticking out, and let it dry. Nice tight hole. I've seen guitars where some idiot drilled a new hole (OMG!).

If you think the toothpick job is too ghetto you can drill & dowel the hole, then re-drill for the screw, same concept, just cleaner. I would do it that way, one, because I'm OCD, and two, because I actually have a bunch of dowel rods around from various projects. 1/8" would probably do it.

cleaner, but who cares? The toothpicks are down inside a hole that has a screw in it - not like you or anyone else is going to ever see it.

I'm a bit OCD but also a bit lazy and time constrained so I'll probably do the toothpicks and wood glue =). So you just totally fill the hole with them and screw it back in?

    Thanks guys!

That's all you have to do. Easy fix. For a strap pin on the upper bass bout of an LP, you want to cram it as full as you can with toothpicks, and use glue. The angle is around 90 degrees, so it's easy for the strap pin to come out if it's not anchored securely, especially combined with the weight of an LP.

I take a round toothpick, break it in half, dip it in elmers woodglue and then put it in the hole, fat side first. that way it matches the taper of the screw. I then use the other end of the toothpick to get an extra drop of glue in the hole, and then screw my strapbutton/lock on. only once, have I ever needed more wood in the hole.

I always use matchsticks, with some PVA glue.

A dowel would literally take me about 2-3 more minutes to do, but I already have all the tools and stuff laying around. Just sayin'.

You're going to need to find some African mahogany toothpicks and aged hide glue made from retired Preakness winners.

Drill it out a little and glue in a oak dowel. With an oak dowel you will never have to fix it again but with soft pine toothpicks you will.

I figured I might as well get it out of the way.

    Yeah, she said that, too.

Depends on how oversized the hole is. Most only need a toothpick or two. If it's a gaping hole, then you're into dowel territory, but that's not the norm. Glue makes a difference too.
