    Default treble bleed(?) problems

Recently came into a tom delonge strat, was wired all kinds of ****ed up.

Tried to redo it, looked up the diagram and it showed that it came with a treble bleed, the cap and resistor seem to lend credence to that, but, having it wired up as per the diagram, the knob isn't doing anything, period. If I press up against the knob it kills the signal, but turning the knob does nothing.

I can post a pic of the wiring later if necessary, and the diagram i followed can found here,

    Thanks

No tone pot, volume pot only.

Did you solder to the back of the pot? That symptom sounds like you cooked the wiper. The wiper is held in place by a small plastic disc thats a mere millimeter or two away from the cover.

Its a shame that "we", (I don't), solder to the back of pots. They aren't designed for that. (Sorry if I meandered over into a rant.)

    Ah, it is indeed.

    Did you use a 500k or 250k?

I understand that. What I'm saying is, it sounds like you cooked the wiper. Put a meter on the wiper and ground terminals, set to ohms. Now push on the knob. If the reading changes, you need a new pot.

I'm going to guess that you need a new pot anyway. Nothing about it should change by pushing the knob. Sounds like the wiper is touching against the grounded cover.

    ^^What he said.

With a 500k, the hifi mod (resistor and cap in parallel between lugs 1 & 2) are at the proper value. If you'd been using those values on a 250k, it might've explained what was happening.

But yeah, it sounds like you need a new pot. Unless it's a push/push killswitch a la Buckethead (which would be kinda fun in a guitar like that), pushing down on the pot shouldn't kill your circuit.

Went to replace the pot and found that the white wire from the jack had come loose, dunno if that was part of the problem or a separate issue but it works now with a new pot

White wire's supposed to be output... with that broken, you shouldn't have any sound at all.

    *shrug*

    Glad it's working for you.

Yeah, I'm not quite sure what was going on with that, but it works not, so I won't ask questions, lol.
