what's your opinion on half power switch? tone drain?should I mod an amp for it?

Bingo, the reason they all hate it is that they don't adjust the impedance. Case closed.

Or their heaters are connected in series so you can't pull any tubes or the amp won't work.
Before pulling tubes, check that first. Most amps are fine to do that with, some or not.
