    Default Seymour Duncan neck humbucker

Hey, I really like the Invader for my bridge position humbucker, but I am having trouble finding a neck pickup I like. Right now, I have the Invader neck pickup and I like the high output, but it is a little too bright. I want a pickup that I can hammer a ton of distortion through, but it stays warm and sounds fluid for sweeps and shredding, but is still articulate for all-over-the-place tapping and powerful for bends. I have been looking at the '59, but I think it may be too bright. I have also been looking at the Full Shred. However, I cannot play them unless I buy them, and now I can only listen to short clips. Any suggestions would be great.

59 is usually bright. A2 does the fluid and warmth best IME. try an A2 in the invader or maybe just try an Alnico 2 pro? If you like hot pickups in the neck maybe try a custom custom?

If you must have a Duncan the Distortion neck, Screamin' Demon, and A2Pro are all different options that will all do that but with very different tones.

What if he replaced the big caps with hex screws or something?

Hex caps would make it brighter and sharpen the attack, I think the opposite of what he wants. An A5 mag might be cool, but I don't know for sure, I guess the invader neck has a cap in it and i don't know if that's supposed to make it brighter or darker. Spec wise it looks close to a jazz neck with the cap screws. I'd just try to find another pickup, especially if the OP hasn't opened a pickup before.

based on what the OP is talking about.... my first suggestion would be a Full Shred neck, which is defined and more articulate in the lows. then a '59 neck, which I don't think would be too bright at all (although I think it'd be brighter than an Invader neck). a polished A4 mag in a nice compliment to either one of those.

I really don't play that style of music (shredding), but a friend of mine has a very expensive Ibanez with a Jazz in the neck. When he played it, with much overdrive I might add, it was awesome!!! Thigh bass, articulate and defined, great neck tone for that type of playing. I tried it of couse, backing off the gain cleaned it very nice. IMO lowering the gain seemed to warm up the bass making it a little fatter but nowhere near muddy. It was the first time I've played a solid body "shredder" guitar that can also come very close to the sound of a hollow body.

I know there are alot of Jazz neck pups out there, but if I was a shredder I would have a Jazz in the neck of my guitar. I play mostly bluesy rock stuff, and the neck pickups in my guitars are, Les Paul (PGn&b), Squier Jagmaster ('59n) Carvin TL-60 (Carvin C22n), and a Peavey Firenza with Gotoh P-90's.

Just so you all know, my LTD has a mahogany body, a maple neck, and a rosewood fretboard. Ah yes, it also has a Floyd Rose trem.

Just to further define my taste, I like Ryan Knight's tone from The Black Dahlia Murder, and I am pretty sure he uses a Dimarzio Air Norton. I wish to be loyal to Seymour Duncan, so a Seymour Duncan neck pickup that is compatible to the Air Norton would be good, But I cannot figure out which SD pickup is the most like it.

Thanks for the tip about buying a pickup, trying it out, then returning it if I do not like it. I will have to read a little more about that.

Does anyone have more descriptions of the Full Shred neck pickup in relation to my preferences?

I have an Ibanez with a mahogany body, maple neck, and rosewood fretboard. The full shred neck sounds amazing! It is tighter than most neck pickups but has a nice singing lead tone. My favorite neck pickup. I am selling mine currently because I want a different color. Anyway, let me know if you have any questions.

it's articulate and well-defined in the lows, meaning that it's tighter than the '59n or even the Jn, especially with high gain. it's more focused toward the highs, but not at all piercing or shrill, so it will come through a little more when used for neck position leads. it also splits well, so it can give a very nice tone when split on a clean amp setting. I don't know if I'd consider the '59n to be all that much brighter since the resonant peak is over 10% less than the FSn, but the FS pups seem to do well in mahogany. both are good neck pups, but the "hammer a ton of distortion through, but it stays warm and sounds fluid for sweeps and shredding, but is still articulate for all-over-the-place tapping and powerful for bends" comment is what made me think of the FSn. I've also had good luck with the FSn in alder. the only neck pup I've liked better is a '59nA4, but that one is a little crisper in the upper mids and highs. although the Invader bridge is pretty loud, the Invader neck is about the same output as the FSn...but the Invader model isn't really known for being very bright, so I'm not sure if there is really anything that will soften it up in comparison. the Invader has a ton of mids where the FSn doesn't, so that might be the difference.

Yeah, the Full Shred is starting to sound good. It will look good with an Invader with black hex caps because the FS has black pole pieces too.
